you actually have a lot of options for around 50 dollars for decent headphones.
    some choices include
    jvc marshmallows-20 bucks
jvc air cushion- 30 bucks ( around the same as marshmallow but with more detail)
    shure e2c - 60 bucks
Koss portapro and the px100 are also good choices
    grado sr60 - 70 bucks
    altec lansing im716

what type of music do you listen to? it would help in narrowing down your choices

50$ is still in that "store brand" category mostly, once your willing to spend 100$ you can get some really decent headphones from audiophile brands that are well worth it.

Audio Technia A700 are what I use and they were worth every penny for both the quality I get to enjoy and the fact they are lasting much longer than any cheaper products I had in the past.

the AKG k81dj's are a good pair of headphones for rap and hip hop. they are about 50-60 bucks.

if you want pretty good earbuds for rap, sennheiser cx300s have strong bass, though i hear its a bit uncontrolled.

If you really want some nice headphones that got some good bass then I'd go for the Beyerdynamic DT770's although they do cost 150USD and are 80ohm(smaller mp3 players may not be able to power them). They are some of the best headphones with alot of bass.

stay away from sony headphones they are poor quality for the price you would do better getting something in the panasonic line for better quality for less money ( but I would go for a higher quality ) your budget really limits you to anything of good quality bump up to something in the $100 - 200 price range if you are looking for good sound and if not go with the panasonic or JVC line fair quality for the $$

I have a set of Sennheisers. Forgot which model... HD-something or other. Retail is about $170 though, but they can be found for $100 US. VERY GOOD!!! And they can be worn for hours.

The bose headphones I've tried... dunno... they sound good for pop music I guess, otherwise they have this really fake sound to them. Hard to explain, but they're very blegh to me.

I had a great pair of sony's (MDR-700's I think) which aren't made anymore, but for about $50 they had really good sound, great base too).

you probably have the sennheiser 555s.

and one thing to remember when buying headphones
    turtle beach is garbage
    bose is garbage
skullcandy is garbage doused in ****.

and deadeyes, you can certainly get good headphones for 50-100 dollars. you just have to know what kinds to get (panasonic? wont be good quality...jvc has pretty decent quality though)

Depends on what you want, Ear buds? IEM's? Open Air? Closed? Its a huge market. For low budget phones I'd suggest Sennheiser PX100's except they are open air so you can hear the sounds around you, which may or may not be what you want. How much your willing to spend is a huge factor too.

Open air is not good for bass in my experience, great for gaming if your ok without the bass and great for classical music :p

I plan to get some AD700's down the road best sound stage I have ever heard.

I have had some experience with high end headphones. In the past I've used Grados and I still think the SR-60s are a great deal, especially for the price. That's what I'm recommending for you if you like over-the-head headphones.

However, AKG makes some good over-the-head headphones as well but I don't think they are quite up to par with the Grados.

If you're looking for in-ear, I've sworn by Shures. Some may say they're overrated but I've had E2Cs since before 2000 and I'm still using the same pair. I've tried the E3C and the E4C as well but the E2C is still the best you can get for the price. Sound quality is good and I've worn them for 15 hour flights over and over.

If you can find the Shure E2Cs for your budget, go for it. If not, Grado SR-60s are your best bet.

It's funny to see the headfi influence here.

Be careful, once you realize how bad your sony/bose/apple headphones are, you will not be able to stop spending money.

I have about $5000 into headphones, headphone amplifiers, power conditioners, etc, now.

I'm using Tritton's AXPC, got them for <80$. Great quality for listening to music, gaming, and watching movies. Though the limitation of USB connectivity might be a turn off for some.

Sony headphones are not "THAT" bad. I have EX90 and they sound pretty good for that price range. Sony also came out with new replacement for their EX71, which is now EX75. You can find a pair online for around $30 to $40 dollars. I got my EX90 for $60 and I am quiet impress with the SQ.

"ahemhem" coming from a Sony fanboy! hahaha

The guys at Head-Fi always say stay away from Bose headphones. I haven't try them before they said Bose is 90% marketing 10% quality.

I also agree with stay away from Apple IEM. I got a pair as a gift and I only use it once or twice. I have a feeling the apple fanboys is going to start a flame war soon.

I'm surprise no one said anything about "Ultimate Ears" . Their SF3 or SF5 suppose to sound pretty good compare to IEM in that price range.

    I personally use Shure SE210 and SE530.

Among my headphones I have the superfi 5 pro. It is a good sounding IEM, a little bassy for my tastes, but it is more emotionally involving than most other IEM's, which is a must for me.

Killer bargains can be found on them nowadays too.

lol... I don't think anyone in their right mind would say that the Apple IEM's are decent quality. Not even the most hard core mac fanboys.

those things HURT my ears. I can't stand to have them in my ears for more than 5 min.

My ferret decided to take the initiative and destroy them.

If your serious about music and/or general sound quality then I recommend, based on personal use:

    Shure E3C
    Ulimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro

I got my Shures thru eBay, my UEs thru ecost.com. I tend to use my Shure set for the laptop and music listening when I travel. I use my UEs whenever I can for music but don't travel with them because I'd hate to lose them. Customer support for UE is exceptional as well.

All the stock Apple earbuds (I have 3 iPods) were tossed into the garbage after about 30 minutes of trying them out with my first iPod.

After looking through a bunch of review sites that deal strictly with headphones. The best bang for the buck would be the Koss PortaPro or the Sennheiser PX100 for around $50. You can check the reviews Here these people seem to be rather knowledgeable about these things.

Yeah, but I hear the build quality of the Mylarone's isn't that great, and the drivers wear out after a couple hundred hours. I don't have any so I can't be certain, but thats just what I've heard about them.
