so here a simple question .

So I know you have to take out you laptop at the security check points but is it the same for wireless mice and lap top web cams?

Nope, just the notebook. Unless of course if you are requested to remove other items from your baggage.

Any idea if leaving them in the sleeves is acceptable?

That is something I have never ever tried for some reason. :p I have always just taken it straight out. But I do recall over hearing 2 airport security in Hong Kong, they were unsure themselves whether or not notebooks should be left in sleeves. the safe bet is, spent the extra 10s and take it out, not doing so might end up costing you 10min.

Airport security with laptops has been fairly painless for me; I just had to put it into a separate bin.

What you want to be careful with is gadgets with many parts like a camera. Several years ago, I got randomly selected for a thorough check and the TSA retard took apart my now-obsolete camera, and put it back together with the AA batteries in reverse +/- position (as well as other mixups).

Ouch...that is quite unfortunate. But I agree, I have had no trouble going through airport security. Just always play it safe dont be lazy and think that you can save a minute or 2.

Yea, the two or three laptops I'll be carrying on my next flight will probably give me trouble with the TSA. Not to mention the weight.

whenever i fly outta LAX its ALL electronic devices that you need to take out, camereas, heaphones with noise cancel, etc...

but generally i leave the smaller ones in my bag and no one says a thing, i ono if the security is just mistaken or im a lil white boy haha

I am surprised they make you do that at LAX...you don't even have to take our your notebook at London Heathrow (way busier and more or a ''target'') anymore because they have new scanners. I dont recall having to take more than my notebook out of my bag in Chicago or Newark either. How troublesome.

@ dtwn, that is gona be annoying indeed. Why so many?

A 17" DTR, a 14" Work laptop, and a 15.4 old laptop. Maybe another 15.4, not sure yet.

Thankfully I should be coming back with fewer, maybe 1 or 2. That probably wouldn't raise the alarms of the lovely TSA.

Been lugging around a 17" as well, no problems with TSA so far as long as you don't say something to the effect of "my computer could do a better security job than you :p". That would undoubtedly lead to you requesting an RMA number after they disassemble your laptop and smash your processor lol.

But seriously, most of the TSA's I've come into contact with are really nice as long as you don't push it or hide anything that you shouldn't be.

I'm more worried about the fact that I'm carrying multiple laptops, not the size. You should try that line with the TSA. :D

Even if it was true, I value my life and my laptop over making fun of security-folk. Only slightly though :p

You know, while we're on the topic of airport security - has anyone ever been given trouble for bringing on an external HDD? I can't help but think that bringing a non-descript metal box (which is what my external HDD looks like) would set off alarms during the security checkpoints, but I'd really like to bring it along with me on long trips overseas.

Brought an ext HDD through before, and didn't have an issue with it being in the bag.
