    No AC adapter. You get a USB Y-cable. And most HDDs don't use more than 500mA, and those which do benefit from the Y-cable (upto 1000mA). So, no worries in terms of power supply.

    is this what it looks like? can I pick one up off of ebay and be safe? would it work with a usb hub?

    You'll most likely get one with the enclosure itself. 500mA is needed for a second or so, to spinup the drive. After that the drive won't require more than 400mA or so, due to the USB 2.0 bandwidth limitation. There are only a couple of mobile drives than need around 600mA (max).

    its a hitachi 5400 or 7200rpm sata 100gb

    can I plug it into a usb hub and still have enough power for the drive if I also plug in the ac adapter for the hub?
