    Hi guys,

Just wondering what your opinion was on the best USB hub. My laptop only has 2, and I have quite a need for extra ones (mainly for my 2 external hard drives). I also use a mouse and occasionally charge my phone/zuneHD on it).

So basically high powered devices.. I would hope that I'd be able to transfer stuff via the hub at a fairly quick rate (transfer rate on my comp is 30mb+).

Budget? Under $40 USD (But not necessarily)

    Thanks!

I have used a D-Link DUB-H4 four port hub (the original A1 revision) for over five years and it is still going strong. I recently bought the seven port DUB-H7 to replace my four port one since I wanted more ports. The cool thing is, both hubs use the same chassis, so they are both identical in size. You can buy the DUB-H7 for less than $30. Amazon sells it for $26 at the moment. They also sell the DUB-H4 for $20. If you're lucky, you can find one for even cheaper on eBay. I bought my DUB-H7 new for $18 shipped.

The DUB-H4's PSU can output 10W (5V, 2.5A). Theoretically, disregarding the very little power needed to power the little LED's and the USB controller, the hub can power all four ports just fine since each port can consume up to 2.5W (5V, 0.5A). Though this is only the worst case scenario as not all devices consume the maximum 500mA. For example, wireless receivers for wireless mice only consume ~100mA. The DUB-H7's PSU can output 15W (5V, 3A). However, if we put a WCS load on all seven ports, the total power consumed would be 17.5W. The 15W PSU can only power six of the seven ports fully, or ~428mA for all seven ports, or whatever mix is presented to the hub that falls less than or equal to 15W. Again I doubt that anyone has seven devices that all consume the maximum 500mA. Some of those devices are probably powered by their own PSU anyway. Then again, all PSU's are manufacturered to have a wattage leeway so that they can safely drive a little bit further than their rated maximum. I don't know how big that safety zone is for a PSU this small, but regardless it should be plenty enough to power all your needs. The controller will probably intervene and shut itself down if power reserves are starting to get dry. Nonetheless, it's nothing to worry about. I have yet to meet someone that uses that much power on an daily routine basis on a seven port hub.

Either way.. D-Link is out of the question. I've had bad times with them, and will never go back to their ugly products.

I have heard the belkin 7 port ones are exceptionally good.. but really I don't 100% know!

I looked into Belkin USB Hubs, and found them to be quite good, the reviews, I mean. I never ended up buying one though. I would recommend Belkin over D-Link ANY day, D-Link is horrible.

This is something I'm interested in as well, seeing as how my laptop has only two USBs.

I look forward to more suggestions!

There is a 16 port USB 2.0 hub that has an internal power supply, but it costs $160 USD.

Lol, well $160 is too much to pay.. besides.. I only need 7 tops... 16 is a bit excessive :)
The Belkin ones are a bit cheaper on Ebay ( here), so that might be a good choice. I've heard nothing but good things about the Logitech one as well. For the logitech one, how fast do files get transfered because the one I had previously (uknown brand) copied files at a rate of 5mb/s top.. which kinda ruins to point of getting a good laptop lol (and it was powered so it was fail).

I believe the logitech ones are slightly cheaper.. as far as I'm aware...

Agreed, I own two with power supplies. Only thing is you have to buy the power supply separately. It's not that you need the power supply. But if you need to power a USB device, then you'll need it.

I bought the power supplies directly from Logitech.

One thing though, I believe Logitech has discontinued the hub.

Abula, its kinda what I'm looking for.. but budget isn't the most important. Power is what I need.. tho without crossing the $100 line of course.

I recently purchased a Belkin 4-port USB hub; however, everytime I need to use it, I gotta unplug it and replug it for it to be detected.

This one uses the same TI controller as the Dlink one. It's the same thing, but in a different casing.

Hey guys, new to the forum and just wanted to get this in the thread as it did show up in google search when I was researching USB hubs. I highly recommend the Cyberpower 7-port powered USB hub.

    Amazon.com: CyberPower High-Speed 7-Port USB Hub: Electronics

The reviews are on point; this is an excellent buy for $30. Very good investment for people who need a lot of devices to power.

Hi, I'm new here. I need your suggestions. I want to buy Logitech Anywhere MX but I need more usb port since my 1st port is placed very close (about 1-2mm) to 2nd port. Is there any idea about the most portable usb hub that can work with Anywhere receiver?

Warranty, not that that's likely to be an issue at that price, and the possibility of not fully meeting specs. Probably not an issue if you use mostly low powered items, but high powered items may overload the hub. Also, if it's not fully up to spec, there is the (slight) danger that it may burn out any accessories attached to it by supplying too much power.

I've had a Targus 7 port hub for many years and it has worked beautifully.

At the time when I got it it was the only such hub available.
