as the heading says, hopefully something that can come close to the quality of the ath m50 and not need an external dac or amp.

ill be using it with my laptop and smartphone (soon to be a galaxy s3).

Bump your price range up a little bit and go with custom fitted IEM's. I had a pair of Westone ES3X and they ran circles around my ATH-M50's. I've hear the 1964 brand is pretty good.

One of the most important aspects of sound quality with IEM's is how well they seal. I have a very difficult time getting them to seal and stay there, but with customs they pop right in and wont move for hours.

    Multi-IEM Review - 250 IEMs compared (Ultimate Ears... 100 added 08/20/12)

I went for the Fischer Audio DBA-02 MkII and love them but I know they're not for everyone. I'm using them with a FiiO E17 since there was too much noise using my laptop's internal sound card. That wasn't the only reason to get the FiiO but it worked well as an excuse. The impedance is rated at 43 Ω and I have no problem using them without a DAC on my phone.

those westones are sick but are way above my price range.
i auditioned the westone 2 but it didnt play well with my smartphone, maybe needs an amp and it wasnt broken in yet.

thanks ill check out that model and see if they are available locally.

thanks, the problem with forums such as head-fi is that i often end up more confused with info overload. too many fanbois etc. i find saner info from non audiophile sites like nbr.

not familiar fischer, ill look into that.
the fiio 17 is a true dac right? i was thinking of getting the e6 and a splitter so me and my gf can use the amp together.
ill look into the fioo 17 too, the only thing kinda keeping me from it are the price and size.

Both the E17 and E7 are a portable DAC + Amp combo, the E17 has more features and a better DAC too, but the E7 is pretty good if you want something not too expensive that gets the job done. There is also the E10.

I use my E7 when i'm using my laptops, otherwise, my iPod's DAC is actually pretty decent.

I was referring to the e6, the small fujiwara amp. I don't think it's a dac as it just attaches to the line out.
