    Hi,

I am thinking of buying an external optical drive so that I can install software that come on DVD-disks onto my netbook. However, I am also hoping to find a blu-ray player that connects to my HD-TV. I do not want to buy multiple devices that probably will go obsolete in a couple of years, and thus, want a single device that serves both my computer and TV.

Has anyone ever tried using their blu-ray player as a DVD-ROM for laptops via a USB connection? I would like to find something that is less than $150 and would appreciate recommendations.

It is very simple. Get an external blu ray reader/dvd and cd writer combo drive. Hook that up to your computer via usb and you can install any software or anything else off disc. Than when you want to watch a bluray connect your computer with an hdmi cable either directly or with a dvi to hdmi adapter if you only have dvi out. Then you just put the movie in the external drive and open it with your software player and it will all be on your tv.

Thanks for the response. My netbook does not have an HDMI or DVI port. Therefore, the device I am interested in buying would have its own HDMI port so that it connects directly to the TV.

In that case, you may be better of getting a stand alone blu-ray player and forgoing the software upgrade since it is unlikely your netbook's systems will be compatible with the blu-ray player.

The best software that can handle just about any format available is Cyberlink (there are several versions), but as you might expect, its a pretty demanding package.

Thanks for the info. I wouldn't mind not being able to watch Blu-Rays on my netbook - as long as I can watch them on my TV. I want a blu-ray player that can be used to install software onto my netbook, and the software I want to install is a DVD-ROM.

You misunderstand. You see, its unlikely your netbook is powerful enough to support blu-ray as that's not what netbooks are typically designed for.

Post your computer stats then we can let you know for sure if its capable of blu-ray playback.

Here are the system requirements for Cyberlink PowerDVD (my favorite). Since there are a few different version and systems vary, the only way to be sure is to try it out. Fortunately, Cyberlink gives you a free 30 day trail so you can do just that.
    Good luck.
