hi guys, i have an xps m1330 and want to carry it in my backpack. i was just wondering how i could do that with the least probability of damaging it. would heavy books pressing the laptop against my back damage it? also, should i shut down/ hibernate/sleep/standby the pc before putting it in the backpack? thanks

Buy a backpack with a laptop compartment. Always shut down before placing a computer into a bag.

tran, their are things made called laptop sleeves. You want a good heavy duty laptop sleeve, which has lots of padding to protect your laptop. I have a Tom Binh sleeve, and it is made of very high quality materials. I recommend buying from them or any other laptop sleeve manufacturer you find.

I suggest the Waterfield sleeve case. Gives the best protection in my opinion.

Zeroshock III is the way to go.
Waterfield sleeves unfortunately tend to rub against the corners of the laptop according to what I have read. -

i already have a backpack with a laptop compartment. would i need to buy a laptop sleeve in addition to that?

only if the laptop compartment isn't padded.
I have a sleeve from Tom Bihn that's great. Love it. www.tombihn.com.
I hibernate when I put the computer in a bag. Make sure not to move the computer until the hard disk shuts off, but it boots faster when you open it back up again if you don't do a full shutdown. -

sleeve on ur laptop and a backpack with a laptop compartment which seperates it from the books

The M1330 doesn't have the world's strongest screen shell so it is probably worth protecting it properly. The sleeve that ships with the machine is fine for everyday protection if you're going to put it in another bag with no sharp things poking about, although I found it slightly heavier than it needed to be.
The hibernate tip is a good one, although I'll add that you can set it to sleep on lid close but hibernate with the power button. This way if you're just moving to another room you can close the lid, but if you're in transit you can hibernate it by prodding the power switch.
