so basically u buy that cable then run that cables coaxil side to the speakers and the optical side to any laptop sound card with optical output? and is this going to get full 5.1?

you can buy the cable that 3.5mm mono to RCA.

or its cheaper to get a 3.5mm mono to RCA female adapter (then you can use any RCA cable).

either case, this will enable up to 7.1 channel audio from the notebook.

    SPDIF comes in two flavors:
    - one is through Coaxial (RCA)
    - one is through Optical (TOSlink)

    both are the same overall.

ok im bringing this back up because i just got my logitech Z-5500 speakers and i bought the adaptor that u were talking about above i pluged that into the frot of my NP 8600 and connected it to my speakers from the adaptor with a red/white rca cable and on the speakers display it says no digital sound detected. Is there some type of driver i need or something?

you need to go to your audio manager and switch from speakers to digital output.

are you using a digital coax cable with an rca adapter on one end or are you just using an 1/8" to rca adapter with a regular rca cable? I was wondering because you said the cable had red and white ends. It should only be one cable, not 2 together.
