I was wondering ow I could connect my DV5 to my TV. It is a regular tube TV, standard definition. I have a VGA port on the laptop and I have seen some cables on Amazon and eBay, but some people say they don't work. Any suggestions about those?

You need a S-Video cable (goes to the S-Video input in your TV while the other goes to the S-Video input on your laptop) on both ends for Visual(picture). And Red, White Audio cable (goes to the Red,White input on your TV) on one end, the other end would look like a headphone jack (Audio).

    Hope that helps,

The laptop doesn't have a s-video jack, but my TV does. All the DV5 has is HDMI and VGA jacks.

You need a VGA to TV signal converter box. They cost around $20~$30 and guaranteed to work (I've tried).

A HDMI to VGA/S0Video converter is very expensive (~$200 or more), and a simple VGA to component cable might not work because Y,Pb,Pr component inputs of most TVs are not compatible with just the R,G,B outputs of a VGA signal (without the sync pulses). Then there are some other cable converters like VGA to S-Video, but in my experience they don't work either.

Therefore your best option is a signal converter like the one I linked above.

I was hoping I could just use a cable. I have a converter for vga to tv, it is just really old, and kind of crappy, as it has a bad vga wire that cause the screen to go green if you don't hold it just right. It is a TView Silver ( http://www.amazon.com/Focus-Enhancements-Tview-Silver-2-Converter/dp/B00006B6QD . My sister had it sitting in her classroom for years (she found it sitting there and she thinks it might have belonged to the previous teacher that had the classroom), but never used it, and it was missing the power adapter. She let me have it and I guess it can do for now.
