I second the cardboard option. It doesn't have the dust fibers of stinkin cloth. Plus it is free.

I personally used the top of a Papa John's pizza box for years.

Check out the Rocketfish Gaming Mouse Pad. It's basically the exact same as the Razer eXactMat, but it's Best Buy's generic in-house brand and is $20 instead of $30.

It's got two sides; one slick side for speed and one rough textured side for control, and a good surface area.

There's also the Razer Goliathus (in Speed and Control editions, depending on your preference) for $15, Kabuto (great for travel/laptop use) for $20, and the Sphex for $15:

From SteelSeries, there's the 4HD ($20), and QcK series (different sizes, between $7 and $25):

I personally use the Razer eXactMat (the one the Rocketfish pad is based on), and it's fantastic. I primarily use the Speed side, but I will occasionally use the Control side when I do some precision sniping.

The validity of my recommendation is highly suspect since this is the only half-decent mousepad I've used to date, but I've used this until now. Revolution MX failed to track properly on it for some reason, but the G9, MX1000 and I think everything else I use does great. I like the texture - isn't too rough, but isn't completely smooth and brakes the mouse quite quickly without getting in the way of twitching.
