Hey guys, i'm going to buy a montior to go with my MBP, i am keenly looking at the Dell E248WFP 24" ( http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/pro...spx/monitor_e248wfp?c=au&cs=aubsd1&l=en&s=bsd) and am going to be using the monitor primarily for my architecture work, because working of a 15.4" is a pain and the extra resolution is also very welcome. What does everyone think of this monitor, good choice? what are other choices? I live in australia, and can get this monitor for about $350 AUD from dell.
Anyway the dilemma part is that i can either buy it now or wait for 3 months and buy then because i am at university and am about to have a 3 month break, from what i have seen this monitor has been around for a while so im guessing that monitor technology doesn't move as fast as other techs. Anyway if i waited the 3 months would i see any better tech for the same price?
thank you in advance
cheers

I just picked up a 24" from Dell. I was looking at the monitor you are looking at but opted for this one because I found a much better deal at the time:

In your case, for 349, that's a good deal. In general, prices on monitors with Dell fluctuate quite a bit and you should only really buy it when it's on sale at a great deal. If you give yourself a 3 month window to buy it, I'm sure you'll come across at least 2 great deals on monitors from Dell. -
For architecture work, that monitor is fine. Monitor prices go down each day, so if you are not in a big hurry then maybe you can get a better price if you wait a while .
FYI : That monitor uses a TN panel (so does most other monitors in that price range). They are cheap but have a limited color depth and viewing angles compared to more expensive PVA/IPS type panels. Mainly because they use 262,144 colors (6bit for color component) with dithering to display true colros (16.7 Million colors), where as the more expensive ones can display 16.7M colors without dithering. But don’t let that bother you, most people use TN panels and notebook LCDs have TN panels. And I'm sure you won't notice a difference... A little something I thought you should know. -

Seems to me I now know what my next choice is going to be. Already the one I am having is giving me a hard time so I guess within sometime I would be left with no alternative but to go for a replacement. I think the one you are talking about is ideal for my purpose too. Time for getting used to bigger things!

yeah i do realise its a TN panel which sucks because for the work im doing im colour dependent, but i cant afford to pay out a little over double the price for a PVA/IPS panel.
is there any chance of PVA/IPS panels getting cheaper in the next 3 months? and is there going to be anything better coming out in the monitor world in the next 3 months?
@jb1007 i think i would prefer to go for the E24WFP because i prefer the 16:10 ratio and extra res. -

If you do not mind used then you can easily get a PVA/MVA panel in the $300 price range. Soyo used to make a 24 MVA panel that was $300. You can look on Ebay for a used monitor. Buying used has a couple of benefits other than being cheaper. You will know whether the LCD you get has any dead pixels, uneven backlight etc by asking the seller.

hmm im in ebay australia, can't seem to find any pva/mva/ips panels, only could find one 27" samsung, and it is too big/too much. are there any particular panels i should be looking for that'll go cheap, be of good quality and are likely to be on the market?
i tried googling it but it didn't come up with anything.
thanks guys -
I doubt it.
I bought my dell 24" 3 years ago and the only tech I missed out on is HDCP capability....something which I don't need -
ive stumbled across a couple 22" ers that have rave reviews
look into Samsung and LG 22" monitors
about $250 USD on sale here ...... -
22" monitors have the same resolution as 20" monitors (1680x1050) so you're losing out on the main benefit of 24" monitors.
I wouldn't recommend purchasing a used monitor, you won't really have a warranty and who knows how its been treated. -
yeah i dont really want to go down to a 22" because of the lose of resolution, anyway i might look around for a while for something better on ebay but i have a feeling im just going to drop it and get the dell, i'll let ya know what happens, thanks guys.
