most likely not an external hard drive. but maybe those small "portable passport" drives. the ones that are usb powered.

interesting thread, I don't have one but my bro-in-law carries his with him in his backpack... He puts tons of stuff for school on it and also takes advantage of the higher speeds on campus to download larger files so he carries it with him to put the files on to it.

Yea, I carry around a WD Passport. 3.5" external hdds require an AC adapter, which is just too awkward to truly use on the go.

Of course. Custom built (by my brother
) Seagate 5400 Momentus 1.8" 80gb portable external
Say that with a mouthful of cornflakes! -
so external hdds require ac adapters?
-
Well usually only the 3.5" ones do. The 2.5" ones can be powered sufficiently by USB.
-
does it drain the battery?

I carry around a 2.5" hard drive I made myself; its an 80GB WD drive I pulled from my old laptop and this enclosure, which is aluminum (durable) and comes with a handy case:

2.5" drives don't need an AC adapter, I just carry around a USB 2.0 cable. -
It would only take out as much power as a USB port can offer, which shouldn't take away a noticeable amount of battery life. I don't leave mine plugged in all the time, but I'm sure if you google it, some tests of some sort will show up.
does anyone carry around their external hdd?
