does external laptop fan works?????

does it work? Anybody ever tried it? How many degree C down after use?

 

Depends. I personally don't think their worth it. They use up power, create noise, and they really only work if your laptop intakes air from the bottom. Some people have great success with them, most people view them as little more then novalty items. I'd say get a Lapinator lap desk which uses passive cooling (really aimed at protecting your lap more then cooling your laptop) and explore the free benefits of undervolting.

And rememeber that its normal for notebook CPUs to run a little hotter then their desktop counter parts. A laptop can take it. It's your lap that usually suffers the most. Worry more about protecting that - after all that's where your mojo power gets made. You don't want your mojo factory over heating and having power failers down the road now do ya?

 

where to get lapinator?
Mainly I don't too concern with my lap because I rarely put a computer on my lap. My main concern is that if you see my other thread my w3v doesnt have fanhole on bottom and hard drive gets warm.. even thought it is not something uncomfortable but it would be better if we know that the cpu is actually cooler..

 

Lapinator doesn't use passive cooling. In fact, it only isolates the heat and prevents it from reaching your lap. The heat is reflected back to your laptop so your laptop gets even WARMER than it would without. It's like putting hot drinks in a thermos to keep the warmth from leaking out.

 

I have the vantech Lapcool2. I use it all the time and it cools my laptop a ton. Just idleing, the fans cool my laptop to a frosty 27C as opposed to the 32C it ususally runs at. I would say it is worth it, because my laptop only gets a little warm, but not hot.

 

Yes they apparently work. There are a number of reviews out there that have measured big differences in temperatures.

I'm looking into this as well and am leaning toward a bytecc model. 3500 rpm and has an air flow of 40 cfm. Fits a 17" laptop. Nice angle.

Depends on you laptop size too. Vantec seems to work well with 15" laptops.

 

wow your laptop only runs at 32C?? Is that the CPU or HDD? My computer CPU runs about 50-ish normal usage with CHC.. (i've seen it went crazy 'til heat reach 87C -maybe playing games) and HDD 42C-52C rough.

hmmm I might get cheapy cheapy one on ebay.. $9 total w/ s&h, but from HK.. I dont know about the quality, but I guess it should be fine...
unless someone could show me somewhat as cheap as this? or higher a lil bit is fine as long as proven quality.

 

and what should we look in buying these(other than physical)? 3000 RPM is good?

also, is it better 3200-3500 rpm 2 fan/30cfm/21dbA
or 300rpm 3 fan/40cfm/25dbA?

mtrivs, yours vantec lapcool2 is the one on top of this page.. that's my first choice and that also the very first laptop cooler I saw it's really really look nice with usb 2 and places for cables/ stuff.. but just too expensive

I dont think I ever complained with the heat under the palmrest, but I just happy when my pc is cool, as I rarely shuts down my pc..

I use one regularly and wouldn't think of normal use wihtout it.
I am interested in "better" : quieter & hand-position-friendly.

Antec Cooler is what I've got for an HP dv1000 (Centrino 1.6 mhz)
it has 2 fan settings - H & L
on Low the fan is distinctly less noisy but temp is warmer
on High the temp under left palm is barely warmer.

With a Dell Inspiron, this makes a huge difference in heat under left palm.

- alum. vs. plastic (alum. pulls away heat by contact)
- wide/deep size - some reviews wish for wider or deeper)
- extra ports: usb, sd card reader, ..
- USB powered (most) or brick/ac
- USB power requirement - one had sort of warning that it draws a lot.
- pass-thru USB connector (so it doesn't block a USB slot ) e.g. Antec has this.

- CFM - airflow, e.g. 40 CFM for Bytecc, 9.4 CFM for Thermaltake, 31 for Antec
- Noise: 18 to 20dBA is low and runs 1,600 - 2,000 rpm ( others up to 3,000 rpm)
25 is highest rating shown, which still claims to be quiet.

One thing I don't see is High / Low switches . . . but Antec has this.
There are also passive coolers - alum. - which also serve as lap trays.

Vantec lapcool3 got a lousy review.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, but don't the fans draw the cool air in from the top and send it out through the long vent along the bottom?


Anywho... Has anyone seen a cooler using passive heatsink technology like the Nexus on a unit meant to protect your lap as well?

 

seems that you didnt see the image clearly.. the fan doesnt draw cool air to any point of the laptop, except a little bit covering the front lcd

 

that thing works exactly like the pacificbreeze cooler. The fans suck up cold air and blow it under the laptop.

It's probably a bad idea for laptops with exhaust vents on the back since then you'll just recirculate hot air

 

So nobody has seen a Nexus-esque heatsink on a lapdesk style unit then?

I wouldn't mind trying to modify something myself if I could find anything along the lines of Targus' lapdesk in aluminum (great design...SHI^^Y materials ), unfortunately it's hard to find **** near anything that you can set a 17" widescreen on just yet...

They are selling really good in Japan and in many stores they are on backorder.
Using this cooler, I have cooled down my CPU by 5C and my HDD by 10C
