I am looking for a 2.5" drive with as large a capacity as possible that has an eSATA interface. There is only one that I have found so far and that is from a manufacturer that I've never hard of, acomdata.

    Any suggestions?

Just get an eSATA enclosure and you can put whatever hard drive(s) you want in it? Newegg has several...

Or my favourite - Thermaltake Blacx. Vantec has something similar but haven't tried them. Blacx has different models incl. one with eSATA and usb support. They support both 2.5" and 3.5" drives but can only use one drive at a time.

Id go the DIY approach they have that new 500gb 7200rpm drive on sale for $112 at dell.com then go pick up a $20 e-sata enclosure for it and you have a top end drive with a brand and warranty you can trust.

or the WD Blue is good, should run cooler and can be found for under $100

Will this 500gb in an enclosure set up require external power source? Or can it draw its power from a single e-sata/usb combo port?

just usb & e-sata, I supposed it would depend on a few factors how well it works though.

    > how good your usb port is
    > how much power the drive needs
    > the enclosure design.

Thats why I would feel more comfortable trying the 500gb WD blue vs the new 7200rpm model I would think it has a higher power requirement and inside of a basic enclosure may get hot with extended use.
