    is there an external bluetooth device that i could hook up to my parents desktop that would allow me to access the info and any devices hooked up to it through my laptop from 2 rooms away.

    Yes but the signal would be crap if you are going through 2 rooms.

    You are better off using wifi.

    I would suggest you use Wifi, do you have wifi in your computers? If not bluetooth could be used, I have done a similar configuration but it would not be the fastest option.
