Get the Xbox one. It is wireless and works great :) really great, plus I think it has best support in PC games.

You're talking about the Xbox 360 wireless controller right?

Get an Xbox 360 controller. It is by far the best PC game pad you can buy; because it is a well-designed controller in its own right, and because every PC game that supports controllers are designed around assuming that you will be using an Xbox 360 controller on your PC.

If you buy a wired Xbox 360 controller, it will just plug in to your system via the attached USB cable. You can easily buy a used wired Xbox 360 controller pretty inexpensively.
If you want the wireless Xbox 360 controller, be sure to buy the "Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows". It comes with a wireless base receiving station that plugs into your computer via USB.

Another vote for the 360 controller. Personally, I would stick with the wired one as I've experienced random disconnect issues with the wireless edition. Could be that it was a bad unit, but since going to wired there have been absolutely no problems whatsoever. Besides, the cable itself is about 3 meters long, so you can set it up a good distance away from your computer. There's the final added benefit of not having to shell out for batteries or the "play and charge" battery pack.

360 controller is really the only option, however there is a cheaper alternative, which is the Afterglow series you can find in gamestop, walmart, etc. It is a bit cheaper, but you do have to load a different version of the 360 driver. Very simple. I have both the official 360 wired and a the afterglow wired, both perform the same. Here is one on amazon; although I believe i found mine for about $20 US

Another vote, but for the wired 360 controller. I'd get the genuine one, they're built like tanks.

It's pretty much plug and play for the USB wired controller, it doesn't have to be for Windows. Plug it in, let Windows see it, you might have to run Windows update once to get the driver up to date, but that's it. No need to hunt software of any kind on the web. Once it's installed, any game that has built in controller support should recognize it instantly and give you the same controls as the 360 version of that game. Some games like Mass Effect on PC have no controller support though.

What would it matter, even if they were making a PC version of that controller?

For PC gaming purposes, it's going to be nearly identical to an Xbox 360 controller. Just because it's newer, doesn't mean it's automatically better.

I would look at he same way as I do buying new computers: if you need one now, buy now, if you can wait, wait. Kent makes a good point too, besides, I've seen the wired 360 controllers go for something like 20$ on sale.

I mentioned it as the OP might not be in a rush and the new controller could be worth the wait.

I just think it has great potential having read Xbox Wire: The New Generation Xbox Controller
The mentioned improvements, for myself personally are worth the wait.

I'd go ahead and buy one. You'll find that some games are just more fun and/or easier to play with using a controller. If you plan on playing any games that were released on both the 360 and PC, you'll be glad you did. Prices have already dropped to around $30 for a wired, $40 for a wireless. $20-$25 for the non-microsoft brands

I'd wait for the Xbox one version for the rumble feature alone. I hear it's been really improved to actually feel like the rumble is moving in different directions rather than just a simple rumble. Like surround sound, but rumble lol

The problem is that PC game developers need to code for that. And I can tell you now that they won't spend the time or money to do that. A PC game developer will code for the lowest common denominator, which is basic gamepad support.

This is different than someone developing for the Xbox One, where a game developer knows that all of their customers are using identical hardware (including multi-directional rumble support).
