I attempted to watch a movie on my laptop last night and used my sony in ear headphones. Needless to say the noise from the aircraft didn't allow me to hear much sound. What do you gents usually use while your flying?

I used to use Sennheiser HD205 closed headphone..it blocks a reasonable level of noise.
now this time i ll use Sennheiser IE7 in-ear-headphones/monitors...they block much more and sound much better.
what is the model name of your sony ? ..u shud try changing the eartips..the universal included tips dont block much sound..very thin material and doesnt go deep inside. -
I cant remember the name of ths stuff off the top of my head, but there is some really good memory foam you could try, however it is quite expensive, about £15 for a few pairs or something like that.
Im going to get some for my Denon C551's (very good IEM's btw). -
i have the ones that wrap around your ears. they stick into your ears some but stay on your ears via the little ear holder piece. I have a set of planitronics headphones i used to use when i played counterstrike that i thought of trying. They aren't in ear but do close off the outside a good bit.

I heard the new Shure olive foam tips are good too.
I own a pair of Weston UM1s which came with comply tips as standard. But from the Comply website, you can buy those tips for many different IEMs. The Um1s works well on the plane and buses. I had a pair of UE Super.fi3 before which I used the standard silicon tips with, luckily I had a good fit with them, which worked well. The Um1s are far more comfortable though. -
You might want to look into some deep penetration IEM's or maybe even some custom fitted IEM's if your willing to go into that price range. Those are usually going to isolate more than a large set of headphones. Or you could get some closed back headphones, such as the Sennheiser HD205's mentioned by nocturnal or some Ultrasone HFI-780's like what I use.

Comply, those are the ones!

i bought some recently..
the fit is highly comfortable BUT..the sound gets muffled unless u fiddle around with the art of wearing it.
takes too much time hence i retired them and using Bi-flange currently -
So where can these comply iem's be bought?

http://www.complyfoam.com/
You have plenty of different IEMs to pick from.
Nocturnal I am using short tips which works fine, as I have got small ears. The long tips did not work for me at all lol. -
Thanks For The Website But What About Earphones What Type Would I Need To Buy?
-
Well that depends on how much you want to spend.

What I use is the Ultimate Ears UE-11. It's a custom-fitted earphone which allows for optimum isolation. I had a lot of problems with the most isolating foam tips of generic-fit in-ear monitors like those from Shure, Etymotic, etc and the Ultimate Ears solved my problems. The 11 replaced a 10 fairly recently, while I use a Shure SE530 with the non-irritating silicone sleeves as my subway beaters as I find the UE's are not suited to everyday, commute-style wearing.
What I'd recommend is the Etymotic ER-6i if you're after noise isolation and don't have my aversion to generic-fit foams, and don't want to spend a fortune. The orange Comply foam tips really work well with the design of the phones to isolate in reasonable comfort, and although they're a tad tinny sounding you can get used to the sound. -
Yep, its absolutely dependant on what you want to spend, you can get some cheap ones for around 15$ or you can get some UE11's for around 1000$, or you could even get some nice cans like the Ultrasone Ed 9's that go for around 1400$. Just depends on how much you want to spend.

You should go buy some ear candy headphones. They have good sound and block out the outside noise. No sense in buying 200 dollar phones when 20 dollars will get the job done.

I got some Jays in-ear monitors, they're pretty decent. Also very high efficiency - don't plug them into the aircraft soundsystem. I did that by mistake; anything higher than the first notch (10%) on the volume control would blast my eardrums. And whenever they made announcements, they always automatically raised the volume to 40% or so.
-
Thats why you use a sound attenuator when on the plane! I got mine free with my old super.fi3, you have to pay $20 for them now.

so i guess johnny is a audiophile. any way what is your price range
-
Nah, I know enough to get by. There are many who knows far more that I do. I like to enjoy my music. But I don't think I'll ever spent the amount of money.
Or so I think. haha
