hello all. im thinking id like to try to use my desktop recovery disc on my external hdd. the reason is to just get a fresh install, and install my main programs at my leisure, then migrate it all over to my main hdd, nice and clean. when im done, then make a backup image of it(the main hdd). my internal hdd is a 320gb wd, and my external is a 500gb wd, in a vantec, esata , or usb, i have it recognized both ways. so esata would be the way to go i guess. my first question, is it ok to even do this? or would there be any types of conflicts anywhere? if not, should i need to partition the external to the same size as the main hdd (320gb) so when i migrate it over itll all match up. if i do need to partition it, how, when i install a program would i tell it to go to the partition on the h drive? (external) for that matter, when i drop in the restore disc, how do i tell it where to go? i have my bios setup now with the boot order, 1. floppy (a drive) 2. dvd drive. 3 external hdd (h) drive. i just dont have it hooked up normally, so my comp normally boots c drive. what it actually is that my c drive is on sata port 4, and my ext hdd is on sata port 2, so if the ext hdd isnt hooked up it just goes to the c. if i have ext. hooked up it goes there (and its listed as 3 in the bios boot order). so im thinking if i hook up my ext hdd, turn it on, drop in my recovery disc, it -should - format and install everything in my ext. but again im unsure abt partitions given a disc size difference. ive never thought about when i install a prog to my docs, or program files... how would i get it to a partition. it may be just easier to skip partitions, if possible. if it easy, i may have room to make an additional partition on it for my sager notebook. i plan on useing acronis true image 11 for the migration when i have the ext. the way i want it. well, i hope i didnt make it to difficult to understand what im up to. any help would be appreciated. thnx don

There are softwares that can do that.Look for softwares that can do the biti by bit copying.
Or may be you can make the image of the internal HDD to the 500GB one.So recovery is also easy.
