Is there such thing as a hdmi to usb? I've been looking around, but I'm confused what to buy. I'm not looking to spend much money, but I'm looking to connect my laptop to tv at a relatively inexpensive price.

Could anybody link me inexpensive options for me? My laptop doesn't have an hdmi port, but my TV does.

Get a VGA cable and call it a day.
Also pick up an 3.5mm audio cable if you want to run sound to the TV.

    Its pretty simple.

List the inputs your TV has
List the outputs your Laptop has

    Find one that matches.

If you have no match then somebody can tell you the cheapest adapter/converter to do the job.

You didnt tell us anything about the TV or Laptop though so nobody can help.

    This too

I don't know of any laptops that don't have VGA out at least (aside from Apple where you need adapters) and most TV's that have HDMI in have VGA somewhere.

    Assumptions are bad

my TV has all the hdmi, vga, all that stuff. my laptop has vga but only doesn't have hdmi.

I was only wondering if there's a hdmi to usb out there.

I looked a lot of vga cable that has attached audio (i didn't want too many cables) and it seems like the attached audio always seems to be very short (only 11" which wouldn't work for my laptop).

So best fit for you use VGA and a 1/8" to RCA cable. Band them together if you want.

There is USB to HDMI but its more of an external video card not just a output form. It consumes computer resources, and its not as fast as a direct output from your laptop so not very well suite for movies/games.

If you want a longer all in one cable they make them however most TV use RCA input so you will have to plug some adapters or a cable on the end anyways since those all in one cables use 1/8" on each end.

1.) For only $3.30 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 6ft Super VGA HD15 M/M Cable w/ Stereo Audio and Triple Shielding (Gold Plated) | SVGA Cables with 3.5mm Stereo Plug

    2.) http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=5612&seq=1&format=2

Or get VGA & Cable Separate

1.) For only $2.42 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 6ft SVGA Super VGA M/M Monitor Cable w/ ferrites (Gold Plated) | SVGA Male/Male Cables w/ ferrites

    +

    2.) http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...d=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=665&seq=1&format=2

This is the device your thinking of for HDMI

For only $38.92 each when QTY 50+ purchased - USB 2.0 to HDMI Display Adapter w/ Audio (1920 x 1080) | USB to Video Converters

This is not targeted for your use, its for people that need an extra monitor that do not have any other outputs for things like web, spreadsheet, dataforms, etc.

Should just probably need that 2nd cable like I said for 3.5mm to RCA to the TV's audio input unless your TV has 3.5mm input.

I see its pretty pricy. Are there TVs with this receiver built in or something and is the connection pretty stable? Personally, my cat loves wires, so HDMI is ok but if something goes wrong then theres a roasted cat.

Dont worry HDMI is not a high current wire it wont cook him.

If it does I recommend duck sauce.

i'm using a vga cable and i've had no success making my TV display using the full resolution. The best I can do is having 2 5" black strips on both sides. Is this because I need a hdmi in order to run it in it's full 1080p resolution?

It would appear that way, according to this.

Toshiba TVs are notorious for this. Other flatscreens I've owned have allowed 1080p over VGA. The Toshiba I currently own has a maximum resolution of 1024x768 over that input.

I havent tried any of these wireless connections since I just use a 15 ft hdmi cable, but in your case you might want to.
the slingcatcher universal media player is a bit expensive but it might solve your issue. I do remember seeing some pretty well reviews $100 ones but i couldnt seem to find it. maybe if you do a little digging you can find something cheaper and better. good luck

Hmmm, in that case, what cable should I buy? Sorry, I'm very unfamiliar with this. I'm not looking to spend too much, but it seems like the VGA cable is not going to work for me since I would like to have 1080p with my laptop to my TV (would like to watch movies on it or even play games).

Probably just a bad overscan setting or improper resolution setting. VGA supports that res fine.

Is there anyway to fix it? I tried everything that I can and it doesn't seem to work well. The recommended settings doesn't go to the side. Is it a problem with my vid card being a geforce 9300M GS?

Although vga does support 1080p fine it just seems that your television does not support it through the vga input. Looking into your television manual vga supports these resolutions. Looks like you could at least do 720p though.

    Resolution______v.frequency____h.frequency___ pixel clock frequency
    640 × 480_______59.940Hz______31.469kHz_______25.175MHz
    800 × 600_______60.317Hz______37.879kHz_______40.000MHz
    1024 × 768______60.004Hz______48.363kHz_______65.000MHz
    1280 × 768______59.870Hz______47.776kHz_______79.500MHz
    1360 × 768______60.015Hz______47.712kHz_______85.500MHz
    1280 × 1024_____60.020Hz______63.981kHz_______108.000MHz

The newest nvidia drivers do have a resizing option so you could at least get rid of the black borders or any oversize from the 1360x768 option. I know its not full hd but at least you wont have any black bars on the sides.

Maybe you could try making a custom resolution using the nvidia control panel for the 1080p and see if the tv would accept it. Please keep in mind that this could possibly damage the television although ive never seen it happen im just letting you know. if you accept the risk then the signal format that the tv says it accepts through hdmi for 1080p is this. you could try making that for the vga.

    Resolution______v.frequency_____h.frequency_____pixel clock frequency
    1920 × 1080p______24.000Hz_______27.000kHz__________74.250MHz
    1920 × 1080p______60.000Hz_______67.500kHz__________148.500MHz

There are other alternatives like setting up an external video card but that will easily cost over $80 lol
In my opinion just buy the $80 analog to digital converter and be done with it.

EDIT: well after looking at a few converters i change my opinion to just use the 720 vga mode as i wasnt able to find a converter under $200 that could convert to 1080p with good quality and reliability. dunno where the $80 price that was mentioned came from but anything at about that price range would only go as high as 720p which you can already do so kinda pointless to buy any of those.

thanks for the post. Is there a separate nvidia driver I should dl? The driver i have don't seem to allow me to resize it to fit my tv.
