i have a problem with my notebook when i use it outdoors.my battery only lasts about an hour.i am thinking of buying a ups ,charge it at home an use it as a power source when the notbook batterie runs low when i am outdoors.i thought of this because i need my laptop outdoors only for a project for a few weeks so it is stupid to buy an expensive extra battery pack.an i really need a ups...is this possible or is it just a stupid idea???

One option might be a "portable power" system. I have used mine for extended notebooking sessions. Basically, it is a battery system that can be used to jump start cars but it also has an inverter and can be used to power just about anything in case of a power outage. A link is provided to better illustrate the type of product - I cannot provide feedback on the merits of this particular model.

If you really need a UPS at home, you could buy one and use it the same way during this temporary need. The one warning I would give is that most UPS systems have some type of power out alarm that would be quite annoying if you were just trying to use it as a battery system. Either get one where you can turn off the alarm, disable it yourself (cut the sire to the speaker inside), or be prepared for an annoying beeping noise.

If you have access to a vehicle while you're working outdoors, I'd suggest a power inverter or universal adapter that can plug into your cigarette lighter. Another possibility, although maybe not too feasible, are there are more solar pads becoming available. The problem being that most, if not all, are designed to charge your battery and not power your machine.
