Um, why the heck would you want such a contraption? I can't think of a single practical application for such a device.

You are from the linux club, you will understand me :D EDIT:Hey,you olso use gentoo linux :D
My problem is, that i need the best external 7.1 card that is been supported in linux. The new creative x-fi notebook does not have a normal x-fi chip and will work with linux. There are only two other cards. One for USB and the other one for firewire. The card for usb is the audigy 2 nx and the card for firewire is the terratec aureon 7.1 firewire.
I own an high-end 7.1 system from "feufel" and need linux support for one 7.1 high-end card. At the moment i have a x-fi fatality in my desktop pc, but i never will see linux drivers for it. I wanted to build in an express-card to pci-x1-slot adapter and put in such a creative x-fi card inside. But my notebook is not sooo new and have only pcmcia (my acer c204).

Is the connector from the 34mm cards the same as of the 54mm cards? On the pictures i see, it seems to be the same.
is there maybe something that puts the pcmcia-cable outside of the notebook? Then i could buy an 34mm adapter and cut it. Then i could connect the 54mm card.

Silly question, but what's wrong with the USB or Firewire 7.1 cards? I use a USB Sound Blaster Live!. It's only a 5.1 card but it works perfectly and I only have two speakers anyways. :D

If you really need 7.1 sound, I assume you have a set of 7.1 speakers? If so, that's a lot of equipment - I doubt you're lugging a 7.1 speaker system around with you, so it isn't very portable. With that in mind, a 7.1 sound card doesn't need to be portable either, therefore, the USB or Firewire 7.1 devices should suit your needs just fine.

I actually made some major edits to this Gentoo HOWTO which show you how to setup ALSA with usb-audio driver and internal intel HD audio, and auto switching between two depending whether or not the USB sound card is plugged in. :D It really works very well.

There is no difference between the connector on the /34 vs. /54 Express cards. The only difference between the two is the physical size of the card. Sort of like the difference between type II and type III PCMCIA cards - same connector, different physical card dimensions. An ExpressCard to x1 Pci-E adapter should be fairly simple to build if you're not scared of a soldering gun. They're basically the exact same thing, just different shape physical connector. It would be a straight pass-thru.

Another option, which is what I'm doing, is to use an external DAC and Amp. I have the SPDIF optical out (from my SB Live USB) going to a Stello DA-100 DAC, and from there to a Stello HP-100 preamp, and from there to a pair of ADAM Audio A7 studio monitors. If any USB sound card supports Dolby Digital output, you could run that to an external 7.1 Dolby Digital decoder.

    Just tossing around ideas!!

The audigy2 nx have not realy good sound quality (and there are some problems with the linux support) and i cant get much information about the terratec aureon 7.1 firewire. I only see a notice, that someone have heard that it work with the firewire sound driver ( http://www.ffado.org/ )

My Idea with the 34mm card adapter for pcmcia and the x1 adapter (i do not need to build it. The express-x1 adapter you can buy in a shop and it work with both 34mm and 54mm cards) i like at the moment most. Can i make the pcmcia connector longer or make the 34mm contacts longer, to be able to connect a 54mm card? Have someone an idea?

    EDIT: I found something

EDIT2: There is omething other what also interesting
    http://www.getcatalyst.com/extender_moreInfo_exp2exp.html

But thats tooo expencive. I would pay 10€ for that, but not more. There is nothing an hardware inside. Only cable from one side to the other.

    And again something: http://www.allion.com/s_test-tool_fixtures.html
    But not for 300USD http://shop.allion.com/Product_List.asp?iGroupNum=3

    Hi everyone,

I have to say that I am quite annoyed with the wonderful world of notebooks and their ever desire to force us to buy technology that we don't want. I have a new HP Pavilion dv6000 notebook and I was shocked to find out that it doesnt have a standard PCMCIA slot instead it has something it calls an Express 54 card slot.

Does anyone know if there exists an adapter that can that fit a PCMCIA GPRS/UTMS Mobile Internet card (T-Mobile). It would be great to continue using my card from work.

I will take any suggestions, however, European choices (even Germany) would be the best. I am racking my brains out trying to find a solution.

Way the way, if there are any German users out there with similar problems, I also speak German too.

    Thanks
