Hi,
I've never gone near an iPod but my friend is having problems with iTunes:
I quote him:
Thanks very much! If you know what's wrong I'm sure he'd be really grateful!

The only thing I can think that happened is the internal memory has gone south.
You could try and slide the "Hold" switch to the "Hold" position and then slide it back. Once that is completed, press and hold the center button and the "Menu" simultaneously and see if the unit re-boots itself. My though is that this procedure will not work since they are unable to restore the device, but it’s still worth a try.
Good Luck! -

It might not work anymore...
That happened with my new iPod touch, and I tried everything possible, and nothing worked. I had just bought it, I went back for an exchange.
Seeing as it's an iPod nano, it might already be out of warranty because I don't know when they bought the iPod, it may be too late to save. =\ -
you can always reset the thing by going into diagnostics menu
Hold play and the middle button untill restart, when you see the apple logo , hold the middle button and the left key and it should take you to the bios, diagnostics menu there should be a section that allows you to test the memory and reset. As for the ipod touch i havent figured that d-menu -
Does apple have technical support? If it does, get your friend to call them and ask
