The vents and fans draw heat away from the parts that heat up; GPU, CPU and the hard drive

Hence you want those parts to cool down and not the fans :) If your fans overheat, that's an altogether bigger problem!

Just have a read of the numerous past threads on traditional designs

definately. You want to cool down the areas on the underside of your laptop. If you can cool down things like GPU, Processor and HD then your fans wont have to work so hard. There is no need to have something on the side of your laptop to cool it down because all that is, is waste heat from your exhaust ports.

I have the same issue with my new Fujitsu P7230 notebook. The notebook uses an exhaust fan on the left side of the notebook and traditional cooling by creating airflow to the bottom of the notebook isn't cutting it. I put my notebook directly on top of a room fan moving far more air than any of the commercial notebook coolers and it did not bring down the CPU temperature much.

However applying the room fan air flow to the side of the notebook sent the temperature plummeting. Interestingly the notebook really heats up while it's in the Fujitsu docking station since it covers about 1/5 of the bottom of the notebook, which it really doesn't need to.

Anyone have suggestions on how to apply airflow to the side of the notebook without generating a huge amount of noise? I've seen some of those USB powered novelty fans which could be an interesting possibility but they may not generate the airflow that's needed for this application.
