Any type of thread that is lighted would be far too thick to use on a keyboard(unless you did the area around the keyboard or something).

Depending on which model of laptop you have, backlit keyboards can be purchased and installed apart, but other than that, there isn't much you can do without tweaking into the device a lot.

I was in my local sporting goods shop and they were selling very small LEDs designed to clip on your hat. Looked like they might clip on your screen too and illuminate the keyboard.

Real cheap ($3) and probably last forever on 1 battery.

you can get some fiber optic thread and pop off all the keys then run the FO thread. Then find some place for the LED's and power them off usb's

Maybe, using Fluorescent UV-Reactive Pens and using a UV Light to illuminate the keyboard, I got the idea from a UV Light Mod created by someone at Overclocking.net, but it might work in this case, too.

It would not require taking the computer apart at all, just writing over the "letter stickers" on the keys, you can choose the colors, too, and the Pens are cheap, Zebra Gel Pens work alright.

Can you drill tiny holes across the frame of the keyboard and insert small white leds all around the rectangular area? I have never tried but that would look cool IMHO..

    no, not under the keys.

I meant on the rectangle that covers the keyboard. over the periphery..

If the light is enough, it should work pretty well I think..
