I know most of you would argue that this thing doesn't need it, but I figured I'd rather have one for when I'm home just to keep my laptop in better condition regardless. The only problem is that by far the cooler with the overall highest rating, both on websites that sell it and forums where people have discussed it, is the Zalman NC2000/1000. It's quiet, efficient, adjustable, it works like a dream for most people. But the fans are positioned too low it seems. My fans are located on the back (like most notebooks) and on the bottom, only the heat comes out from only two vents located at the back of its underbelly beneath the screen. The rubber stops located at the top and bottom of the Zalman look like they trap heat and air and sent them out of the sides but I'm not sure.
I'd love to hear anyone's comments on this as I continue to search for answers on google.
Thanks in advance!

Take a look at the Cryo LX.
-
I'm not sure what you mean, because my understanding of the NP8690 is that they suck in air from the bottom, and blow it out the back. The NC2000 sucks in air from the bottom and blows it up through all of the little holes in the upper surface. Now, the low placement of the NC2000 fans will mean that the airflow will impinge on the lower front of your notebook first, and so will cool your HDD before, hopefully, spilling on upwards to get sucked into your NP8690 fans.

The zalman is built for laptops w/ cooling in the front (it wont be as effective as the cryo lx). The cryo is huge and silly but if you're going for better cooling the cryo is your top choice.

cryo lx
it has 3 fans right? maybe best to use it with ac power instead usb power. that kind of power draw causes heat too which could limit its cooling.
my old cooler which is admittedly not the right shape for the 8690, actually increases its temp by 1* due to the power draw. -

NZXT also ships out an AC adapter that can be plugged into the wall as well. -
I own a Cryo, been really happy with it, i ended up buying other fans and 12v psu, and imo its a nice flexible setup, although its big laptop cooler it folds and makes it easier to carry (i wouldn't call it portable but manageable with big backpack).
Recently i seen good comments about Thermaltake Massive23 ST, not sure how it will compare to the Cryo, but seems good reviews for $30 cooler. -
i believe there is a review on here for the thermaltak cooler. if i remember correctly, it had a really good review. -
and you? btw did you end up getting the 1201N?
But lets assume my cryo would get stolen and im replacing it, i probably wouldn't bother changing the fans, maybe the 12v psu as its just plug n play. -
the upcoming zalman nc2500 is looking tempting, not that i worry about my temps but it has a storage space for an external hd. (i have a tiny ssd so this would be perfect)
also the nc3000 looks sharp as well -
that's great to hear, abula.
i think i might just not get the small laptop/netbook and just get a 17" gaming laptop. i'll just let everyone use my m1530 and i'll keep the g73 on my cooler where only i will use it.
