I'm looking to get one of those privacy screens for my laptop, but the cheapest I've been able to see online has been around $70 if not from eBay. Do any stores actually sell them or will I most likely only find them sold on-line? It would be great if any stores plan on having a sale on them for Black Friday. Does anyone know if such a thing will happen?

I have a 17" Dell Inspiron that I hope to use this for.

I ve heard they are sold online mostly. Rare to find otherwise. It reduces viewing angle right?

yeah, basically the only place you can actually see the stuff on the screen is from right in front of it. i have seen them sold for desktop monitors, but haven't really seen anyone selling them for laptops except online.

I have seen them at Best Buy. They only had a couple, and they were for 15 and 17" screens......too big for my 13.3 though

I heard that 3M sells this thing they call a Privacy Filter that you can attach to your screen.

You might wanna look for those things.

My resolution is too crazy for my laptop's size that the only way that you could see whats on my screen is if you were next to me looking at the screen.

And if I didn't want you to look at it, I'd just push the laptop an inch farther away.

    Yay WUXGA.

But I was looking around, and I couldn't find anything cheaper than $70 for a privacy filter that size.

    Best of luck to ya!

I know that this is an older thread and all, but I didn't want to start a new one about the topic, as I'm sure I would have gotten the seemingly obligatory "use the search function" post. This is a topic of interest because I've often wondered about the usefulness and practicality of using a privacy filter. How many of you actually use them? Do they really work at all? How many people have actually seen them on a computer screen and, more importantly, did it reduce or completely obstruct your line-of-sight when viewing from an angle? Basically, is purchasing one worth it, especially if you plan on being in public areas (campus, library, bookstore, etc.)?

I would recommend them ONLY if you do not mind loss in quality. I have bought 3 differnt ones (Japan) and peeled them off and cut them to toss on my Cell. The quality loss was quite noticeable making whites look kind of rainbow etc. I even peeled it off my phone in the end. On my phone watching HDTV (Live stream) it looked worse then a tv using antenna with the privacy screen.

I noticed that they block horizontally very well but once it comes to vertical it worked minimally as I could still read the screen standing.

I'm using the sony one for my SZ and love it. I had to finally get it because classmate (college) were just blatantly looking at my screen all the time. It just got really annoying for strangers to comment on what I'm doing on my laptop all the time (without actually talking to me).

    Anyways.

I wrote a review on it on Amazon. I really do like it. Yes, it does darken the screen a little - but my screen was so bright before that I see it as a worthy compromise.

Thank you. This is exactly what I wondered about.

So, you did notice a difference. As you can see above, X2P says that the vertical protection is not on par with horizontal protection. I'm sure that wouldn't be too big a deal, especially since you can feel someone standing over you. It's a lot harder to tell if someone sitting down next to you is trying to view your information. I think that I may go ahead and give one a shot. I might even be able to talk one of the Best Buy guys into letting me try one out at the store so I can see how much it affects quality.

Yes. There definitely is a difference. If my sony sz didn't already have a wonderfully bright screen, I wouldn't like the darkening effect of the privacy screen. Full Brightness Setting + Privacy Screen = Medium/High brightness.

I can also see slight little lines of the privacy screen. I don't notice it anymore, but when I first got the screen and put it on/took it off - I could definitely see it. It's something that kinda melds into the backround after a little time.

Overall impression. Yes - a PERFECT product wouldn't darken the screen at ALL, has a "smarter" range of screen visibility - but I don't think that product exists yet.

On another note - different brands of privacy screens attach differently. The Sony branded one I got is made for the SZ, so it integrates perfectly. You cannot tell there is a separate screen on just by looking at it.

Tape a black piece of paper into your screen... Now your laptop has its own complete privacy.

If you have a glossy screen, it kinda acts as privacy filter. Check your viewing angles first
