i'm going to be buying a laptop in a few weeks, and was also considering getting one of those kensington locking mechanism thingy since i'm going to be bringing it into my college dorm (someone's laptop got stolen last semester :( ). one thing i'm concerned about is if these things actually are effective or not, since the cables seem pretty thin.

i was thinking of getting something like this

anyone have any input on how effective these locks are?

    thanks.

They are very effective, when used properly. Laptop theft usually occurs when someone leaves one unattended, in plain view. It only takes seconds...with a lock they will move on.

Those things generally just keep honest people honest. There ARE some that are harder to break than others, but anyone with a good pair of wire cutters can generally cut right through. That being said, if someone is going to steal a laptop in a college dorm, time is not a luxury they have and thus will most likely pass on the one locked down with at least SOME sort of device. Its worth picking up.
