I am looking to replace a worn out backpack. I have a Sony Z which is only 13". I also want to be able to easily carry a 1GB external, compact digital camera, power adapters, and sometimes a real book.
I've been looking and cannot understand why this one: SwissGear SA1908 ScanSmart Backpack in Black cost $189, and most of the others are about $100 cheaper.. is the SwissGear really better and worth it?

Amazon.com: Used and New: SwissGear SA1908 ScanSmart Backpack in Black

this one is only $75 SwissGear Carbon Backpack - Notebook carrying backpack - 17" - black

open to other suggestions. I don't want anything too big... but want good padded area for the laptop, and a cool modern looking backpack, that doesn't look like I am going mountain climbing.

This is because this is sold by a third party, NOT Amazon. They've jacked up the price since no one else is selling this item...I think for this much money, you can get other bags which are normally more pricey...There are a few backpack threads here. Quite a few pointers to see what fits. eBags also has a lot of bags you can enter your laptop size in to see what fits.

Have a look at the Swissgear Hudson and the Swissgear Synergy for 15" backpacks. Also head over to ebags for a wider selection.

+1 for SwissGear & esp. the Synergy.

@OP, Swiss Gear is def. worth it. Great brand with reliability, durability, and roomyness.

Anytime anyone asks for suggestions on backpacks I'll always recommend the Oakley Kitchen Sink. It is big and heavy but it is also the best back pack I've ever seen or used. Holds crazy amounts of stuff and it built to last.

Yeah, but it's good to note that the OP has a 13" laptop, and not a 17" one. Will be oversized, which is never a good thing (well to me anyways) ;)

Have a look at the Targus A7 backpack, it's pretty inexpensive but impressively well built and featured. It's also not HUGE unlike some other notebook backpacks.

I totally agree but it really depends on what you want to carry. I've used this back pack to carry my Alienware m11x along with a bunch of other stuff. If I just want to take my m11x and the essentials I'll use something smaller like my Oakley vertical messenger.
