i currently have a somewhat cheap noise canceling pair of headphones but the sound does not work in one ear. So i was thinking now is the time to upgrade. I do not want to be cheap with my headset again. I am perfectly comfortable with with over the ear headphones...i think i would prefer them unless there is an on the ear pair that is easily the best product on the market right now. I have some nice gift cards to circuit city and best buy...so if possible i would prefer for them to be available there. But i realize that to get the best deal, this is probably not a viable option. That being said i would like to keep the price under $150 but if i had to stretch a little more then i could do that. I want the headphones to be reliable and preferably not to be prone to wire damage. Maybe headphones that let u change the wire?

    All advice appreciated

You could try out the sennheiser HD595, Grado SR125, Audio Technica ATHA700, or Alessandro ms-1. Check out head-fi for recommendations.

Everything is overpriced (and choices are limited) at Circuit City or Best Buy, so it is generally good idea to look somewhere else. However, if you really want to but it there, I think ATH-AD700 is relatively less "overpriced" there, and it is at 150$ at CC (20$ less than HD555, which AD700 compares favorably). Great soundstage, although you may want to look elsewhere if you are a basshead.

The HD280 Pro can be had for around $100 at places like Amazon and Newegg. I recently got them and they are amazing. The sound quality is superb and I love being able to fold them up.

Another company on par with Shure is UltimateEars. I have a pair of Super.Fi Pro 5s, my gf has a lower rung, and we both like them a lot.
