So I have been buying cheap mice for a while. Never really felt the need for a gaming mouse. The problem I have is the scroll wheels are constantly giving out. I'm getting sick of replacing them. It seems like every year I need to get a new mouse. Can anyone recommend one that might last?

My G700 hasn't ever had an issue and I've had it since late 2010...

I have the Logitech Anywhere MX for my laptop. If it were Bluetooth it would be perfect. That said, even with the mini USB receiver, the mouse is extremely sturdy and has been banged about quite a bit during travel. The power switch is also a cover for the laser, so no dust and dirt get in there. Also, the scroll wheel can be set to click or spin freely which is kind of nice. It's definitely a travel mouse in terms of size, but my big hands don't mind this one as much as I have others (MS Arc, other Logitech notebook mice, etc.)

For desktop mice, the Logitech G7 was one of the best ever made and the G500 is the wired successor to it. I personally use the G700 on my desktop and like it. My wife, who has small hands, hates it.

I'd say regardless of what you end up getting, go to your favorite local technology store and put your hand on them to see what feels decent. As long as you buy something in the $40+ range from Logitech or MS it should last.

Been using high end Logitech Flagship mice for the past 12 years and have never had a issue with the scroll wheels. Right now, I'm using the G700 which is a full blown gaming mouse. When I'm at work, I use the Logitech MX Performance Mouse which is a good productivity mouse. But yea. Never had a problem with their scroll wheels.

The razer deathadder is also very solide and very great to use if your hand is not to big. If you want cheaper the g500 is not too bad too!

Looks like the Logitech 500 is either more expensive or about the same price as the Deathadder. It is not cheaper.

My MX518 works as well today as it did when I bought it 3 years ago.

I've got a logitech MX Performance mouse and the scroll wheel works great. My old MX Revolution worked until I retired it. They have the click scroll and the free wheel scrolling. I myself love the free wheel scrolling.

Free wheel scrolling is a MUST now for me. Scrolling through web pages is so much easier. I can't even use click scrolling anymore unless I am gaming. Free Wheel scrolling when gaming is not good and click scrolling is a must. This is one of the reasons I love Logitech mice that can change between either click or free wheel.

Loved my MX518 when I had my desktop. It was the last wired mouse I used. However, I went wireless after I started gaming on a laptop and I cannot go back to wired. I have tried but it just feels totally different now after getting use to a wireless mouse.

No problems with my scroll wheel on the MX518, I also quite like the scroll on the Orochi since its fat and notched pretty heavily for both good grip and actual rotation feedback so you only scroll as many times as you want.

I can vouch for durability of the MX518 its never died on me even after many years of use. The Orochi I have not owned long enough nor used nearly as often.

I am not a fan of mice with the left/right tilt scroll wheel like my G7 it tends to make it hard to use the "press in" click feature very useful for games and from a design standpoint that seems like it would be less durable in the long run due to more moving parts.

The scroll wheel on my G700 can be tilted to the left and right however, it takes a good amount of force and does not pose a problem when pressing the scroll wheel. Your right though. I have used the G7 and this was a problem for me.

The Deathadder is a sweet mouse, pretty much all-around for games in my experience.

I've never had problems with the cables on logitech mice, I've used the G5, MX518, and G700. They've all been excellent.

    longhairedfreak,

I've used Logitech MX500 at work and MX518 for several years before landing happily in 3Q2011 on the G500. I like remapping the two sensitivity buttons to increase font size and decrease font size. The free-wheel scrolling (you can also have clicks when you prefer) is especially useful. You might look for a sale or special on the G500, which I regard as superior in flexibility to the MX518.

Not wanting to go off topic, but has the battery life in the G700 gotten any better since release? I had one when they were first released, and love the feel of it, but the battery life sucked. And as far as the OP, anything made by Logitech IMO has probably the best scroll wheels ever made.

No, I recently bought a G700 to replace a G7 and the battery life is awful. To be fair, unlike other wireless mice you can plug it in easily and recharge while still using it, but for extended marathon wireless gaming, it's less than ideal. I've grown used to just using it wired 90% of the time. As a result, I wouldn't recommend one for laptop and travel use.

The G700 is not good on battery life with the stock settings. You must change the poling rate within Setpoint to 125 when not gaming. I have two profiles. One for gaming and one for everything else. When gaming, I use a poling rate of 1000. When doing everything else, I use a poling rate of 125 which increases battery life significantly. Using a poling rate of 1000 will only get you about 2-3 days of battery life but there is no need to use such a high poling rate when your not gaming.

Lastly, I also purchased a pack of Energizer rechargeable batteries. I always have 4 full batteries in my laptop bad so instead of plugging the mouse in, I just swap out the battery.

Any wireless gaming mouse wit ha poling rate capable of 1000 is not going to have a going battery life. It's just not possible.

Good tip - I wasn't aware of that. I'll have to check it out.
