hey guys im stuck between the mx518 and the g5 mouse. so far the differences i have seen between them:

    g5-
    --is a laser mouse
--has 2000 max dpi instead of 1600 (those this really make a difference)
--has only 1 side button though (i def dont want the blue version)
    --has weights
--has a better mouse teflon under pad thing

    mx518-
    --10 bucks cheaper
    --1600 max dpi
    --optical mouse :/
--i think its a bit bigger and smoother

which one do you think i should get?

In terms of raw performance, the MX518 is one of the best mice around due to it having an extremely high malfunction speed. However, if you're a higher sensitivity player than this won't matter because you'll never be moving the mouse fast enough to malfunction. They are the same size in general. The max DPI is largely minimal once you get to 1600, imo. Why don't you want the "blue" one? I have it and really prefer it due to the material it's made out of which doesn't build up dead skin or sweat as much.

For you, I'd say get the MX518 unless you're a high sensitivity player that really wants the ability to easily change weights or whatever other feature intrigues you. And, if you're concerned about the glide of the MX518 just buy some teflon tape and place it over the five smaller feet.

i dont like the looks of the blue one :D. looks matter. also tried it out at best buy and the rough surfacing wasnt good for me. doesnt look like it would be comfortable over long periods of time. and what is this high malfunction speed? what?

I like the 518 the best.

Its light, very accurate, perfect button layout and feedback from the buttons. Also its cheaper than the 518.

I think the G5 is just there to try to appeal to those that think laser is better than optical.. however I have a G7 wich is laser 2000dpi and a 1600dpi optical 518 and I can say the optical i honestly better, it works better on more surfaces and the difference from 1600dpi to 2000dpi is very small, and thats only if you plan to use higher than 1600 in the first place.

I would say the G5 has better performance but the mx518 has better comfort and feeling.

Read this and it'll explain a lot. Laser mice have extremely poor performance in comparison, but it really doesn't matter if you're a high sensitivity player.

wow that benchmark thread was crazy for the mice, lots of detial there. Too bad the g7 didnt make the list.

I am glad that light was shined on this thread by some smart people that know optical is equal too or better than laser, last thread about mice I put in my opinion that the mx518 > g5 and I got a negative feedback and and alot of bad pm's from somebody that swore up and down I lied to the forums and should be tarred and feathered for it.
