Creative X-Fi is a good choice. I just bought one and I notice a considerable difference in sound quality. It's louder, richer, and the bass definitely seems to be more noticeable.

They haven't said "In stock" in a while, so I ordered from Dell. If you get it from Creative though they offer a 30 day moneyback guarantee that you'll like it.

I support the above 100% Creative has some of the best sound cards I've ever used for a computer.

Plus the software that comes with them is actually useful.

Yes...the Creative X-Fi is a very good option. Another alternative is the M-Audio Transit.

When I used a Creative sound card for my notebook I found the Sound Blaster Creative Audigy 2 ZS very nice, this was however, about a year ago and I'm sure they have an upgraded version.

Be aware of possible complications though. I'm having issues with a x-fi notebook card and nobody on this forum seems to know of a solution or they just don't care. I went to another forum and found some good information on the subject by a helpful member there. Read about it here : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=230254

slightly OT: my old fush*tsu's headphone jack socket has decided its had enough and has become unsoldered from the motherboard. I don't have any soldering equipment, nor am i capable of performing the repair myself, and my local computer shop wants my computer for a week and 50 GBP (ridiculous)

any inexpensive solution to bypass that socket? cheap sound card or usb solution?
