My current headset is a Sony MDR-G56, a "behind the head" headphones that I like and am content with the sound quality. I use it with my laptop and mp3 player, and portability is my main use here. this is the pic of my current one

however I am considering some earphones/earbuds as a replacement and am wanting something a good a quality as the MDR-G56 or better, but I don't want to break the bank either, so I'm looking for something under $40. sound isolation isn't important for me, bass is though.

I am looking at the Harman JBL Reference 220, which is under $30 now and am wondering if it will be a worthy replacement.

bass would be more powerful on your current headphone, the earphone would just tire your ear, and it is more bad for your hearing also, i quit using my beloved Sony MDR-E888LP because my hearing would be slightly compromised after using it for about an hour or so.

in any case the headphone is more healthy alternative. bass is more powerful too.

if you want a more portable headphone, try the clip-on ear one. but i don't think its worth the money.

    neither.
If you're want sound quality the absolute best price vs quality in that range are Koss KSC75s. Bass is heavy, and almost too much so imo. They arent in-the-ear like your old ones--and are somewhat ugly but as a recent owner I
must say it blows away my old ipod headphones. you can grab these for about $15 bucks on amazon

if you must have earbuds Ive heard very good things about the yuin pk3 which is supposed to have similar sound quality to the koss. these cost $38 bucks shipped

If you want to do more research or have questions, www.head-fi.org/forums is a great resource for sound and headgear.

    good luck.

get the in ear design one if you dont want to be drowned in static noise and it has a higher Dbl frequency so it clearer

Low-ish cost in-earphones? Sennheiser CX300, or if you can't afford them, Creative EP630. If you can go up to about $100, Etymotic research ER6i, alternatively Ultimate Ears Metro.fi 2. And if you really want to splurge, get Shure SE420. I have them and they are awesome. Especially if combined with a high-fidelity audioplayer (I've got a Cowon X5 :D)

The Shure E2's are a possibility if you can find it on sale. It's MSRP is abit over $100 but on sale I'ev seen it go as low as $49.

But Etymotic Er6i are still better than the e2c. They're likely the best sub-$100 earphines. So if you find a pair somwhat cheap ($70-ish) get them.

Hi everyone thanks for the reply.

Yes I tried head-fi forums first, but they totally ignored my question!! :(

secondly, it doesn't have to be earphones, I just want something portable. my behind the neck, Sonys are nice but because of their fixed size, can be awkward to store in a bag.

I'm considering that Koss over the ear head phone mentioned above..

are headphones like those always better than earphones?

well some headphones kind of let noise out, my phillips headphones have little speakers making them totally audible by others when being used.

earphones are more personal and less visible.
