ive had a trusted maxtor 320gb external hard drive for years which in the last few weeks is giving an error when transfering data too it but after a HD tune and HD sentinal pro sector scan it comes back with no bad sectors.

so just in case it is on its way out i need a new backup for my laptop.

checked through loads online and the plug and play pocket drives like samsung M3 look ok but i think a desktop one in its own case would be better as its not needed to move about and it only sits in one place on my desk.

so any recommendations on whats good or not out there.
    1-2tb usb2/3 would be plenty.

    thanks

    1. Toshiba Stor.E Basics 2 TB - £100 inc VAT
    2. WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB - £75 inc VAT

SSD are most portable, fast, and do not heat. With the SSD slowly picking up trend, expect their prices to drop in the near future.

wonder when they will stary mass producing external ssd backup drives as so far ive never seen one.

It's £119 now but whichever way, I doubt there is anything that can beat this price.. I remember paying £60 for my 1TB WD My Digital Home Edition external drive in 2010..

    WD7500BPKX:
WD Black | Mobile 2.5-inch Hard Drives

    ... mounted in this enclosure:
    eSATAp & USB 3.0 2.5" SATA 6Gbps Hard Drive Enclosure | HDD Enclosures | StarTech.com

I've used this for the past month, but I also have the 500 Gb SATA II version in another external enclosure that's in use for backups on another machine. That disk has been in use for the past two years.

now thats what i call service.

ordered on 22nd at 6pm and wasnt desperate to receive it before crimbo so instead of the £7 or £12 next day delivery i decided on the free 5-7 days postage.
delivered this morning at 9am so top marks Amazon.

great compact 3tb drive. stands up so takes up hardly any space.
comes with 30 day trial of backup software but dont need that.
usb3 cable and mains cable included.
plug in turn on and its ready in seconds.

    3 hours to transfer 300gb

all done and dusted before christmas. now i wasnt expecting that. :D
