Yeah thats what I am going to do.![]()
I was thinking about those too after it was recommended above, but I wanted some circumural headphones, prefer those for comfort. ^^ Nice deal though!

If your still considering IEMs,
AT that price I would recommend
Head-Direct RE0
http://www.head-direct.com/product_detail.php?p=38
They are a bit above your budget, 40ish
But they are going half off.
I have a pair and they are amazing, and with an amp they do wonders.
But if you want more of a professional advice here is a review.

They come to around 110US after shipping but originally they are 200. -
I've been looking around for headphones as well and these are what I'm getting:
Shure SRH750DJ. They are coming out in November and are going for $120.00.

some shures are out at tiger direct.
My recommendation would be try them out first.
Honestly reviews can only tell you so much.
Go to the store and try them.
(bay-bloor radio store would be best?)
And yeah Shures are good. -
I've been looking for headphones for ages and couldn't find any inter-ear ones that had great sound and were comfortable. In desperation, while at Best Buy the other day, I tried their BOSE inter-ear set, and it was FABULOUS. So COMFORTABLE (cause it just sits inside the ear --- you don't poke it into your ear) and the sound quality was really, really great! Price was $100 -- a little over your budget, but you might want to pay a little more for the great quality (and they also give you a coupon for several sets of ear tips (in your own size) for free).
-
Those are normally called ear buds, not IEM's. They don't isolate so they wont work well for blocking out sound. The most comfortable IEM you can can get would be custom fitted ones, they also isolate the best.

Well.the bose ones are currently 45 after you trade-in and pm at bb..sooo
", Future Shop is selling the Bose earphones for $69.99 for today only. These qualify for the Best Buy trade-in program for $20 credit on any old set of earphones. Best Buy price for these earphones are $119.99, so the PM should be good for $65 and $20 credit would result in $45 plus taxes."

Nice, got my MS1i's today, burning them in right now. They sound pretty good out of the box already hah. I'm currently running the FiiO E5 Amp which is pretty low end but not that bad. However, I'm looking to get a AP2V2 for a little upgrade.
-
The MS1i shouldn't need an amp, they're very easily driven and will see little to no improvement. If your ears ever start hurting from clamping pressure, flatten out the headband by bending it out a bit, or remove the black foam pads so that you can wash and dry them to soften them a bit.
By the way, the MS1 is one of the most popular headphones to hotrod. Check out this thread if you'd like to see some modifications others have made.

Enjoy! -
Hey guys, I know I haven't really been too active lately on this particular topic. I've been going back and forth btw IEMs and circumaurals and I've done a lot more research. I hope the RE0's will stay on sale for a bit longer as I've decided on purchasing that in the next little while.
I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions, especially peli_kan for his great summary/suggestions. I'm also still considering the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS205 to test out how much sound changes over Bluetooth.
However, since I'm out of the country, I won't be able to try out the headphones until mid December (hence why I hope the headphones will stay on sale for a little while longer). -
Thanks for the heads up! I'll take a look into it

Congrats on the cans, the MS1s were my first 'real' headphone. I sold them last year and despite now having a setup that costs many times more, I still miss them for certain tracks.
Great stuff, no doubt.
I modded mine with the comfy pads, which made them sound a bit clearer and were a bit more comfortable as well. -
Yea, the stock pads are getting annoying. I have smaller ears but they 'flap' out quite a bit so I find that at stock the pads are too tight and too small. However, if I make it a bit more loose, it'll easily come off.
Been thinking of some Grado GS1000 pads but $70 is alot for just pads. The Sennheiser 414's are ridiculously yellow haha
-
Now that you are a owner of MS1i try this if you want
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/alessandro-ms1000-ms-ultimate-diy-modding-56k-warning-323271/ -
I am actually serious considering the MS1i now too especially considering their price. The GS1000 pads are $69+tax! D: There is a store in here in Ottawa which sells them. The only thing I am worried about the MS1i's are comfort as I have pretty small ears, though they will only be for use at my desk.
-
I finally got the HD414 pads today, did the quatermod, wow is it so much better. Alot more clearer. However, my FiiO E5 amp which I picked up for $15 needs to be replaced cause, well, its not really helping that much. Looking for a replacement, not sure what to look for. The PA2V2 looks good, mainly cause of its price and the seller, who actually makes it at home, lives 20 minutes away from me
Oh, did I mention I also picked up a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770's? Should be here next week
-
I have a pair of Grado SR-60's and personally, I think they are highly over rated. I know that will shock many of the "audiophiles" who push them, but honestly, I don't find their sound quality to be anything to write home about.
I did follow your advice on the Meelectronics AI-M9s, since you stated they are better than the Sennheiser CX-300s (which I like). For $16 from Overstock.com, it isn't like I can go wrong.
For those interested in Grados, don't be swayed by everything you hear about them. They are very much something you have to a) see for yourself and wear - aesthetically, they are hideous, and I doubt any Grado owner will tell you differently and b) you have to hear them for yourself to decide if they are worth it. They aren't horrible, but personally I've gotten better sound quality out of earbuds that cost <$20. -
Oh all hell is going to break loose....
Picking up a Meier Corda Headsix amp, PA2v2 amp and Sennheiser HD555.
Well, uhh, there goes my SSD money... -
I also have Sennheiser HD595's, and I still love them, though I hardly hook up my high end equipment these days. Happy listening with your purchases, I'm sure it will be great
-
lol, sounds like you've been hooked coriolis. All I can say is stay away from speakers, cause wow those are much more expensive.
-
Ultrasone is another one to look at, I find Sennheisers to have a hifi sound.
-
You were probably better off putting that into a pro soundcard and a decent PMP - or indeed an SSD where the improvements are actually quantifiable from a real-world perspective... but I know Head-Fi delusion can be a huge influence.
So many people getting positive benefits, it's gotta be better - not just you wanting it to sound better, right? I believe I've got rid of all my portable amps, the last being the Pico - waste of time and money. A fun waste in most cases, but a waste all the same. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Nice, you are hooked. Things will not get any better for your wallet (quite the opposite), but I find that the money I invested in my setup to be an extremely rewarding investment. -
Very true.
The HD555 fell through, but I picked up something else..
So, in the past few weeks...
-Alessandro MS1i
-Corda Headsix
-Beyerdynamic DT770
-Head-Direct RE0
-iBasso D2+ Boa
I need to pick up some decent interconnects, anyone have recommendations? I looked at the iBasso ones which look nice but at $30 a pop and $20+ for shipping....uhhh....
Of course, I have use for all of the cans/IEM + Amps, one for the commute, one for the computer and one for general usage.
That's what I tell myself, yeap yeap....yeap...yeap....
-
I just use mogami for interconnects. You don't need any silver coated copper plated cryogen treated snake oil cables. Just get something nice(aesthetically and construction) and shielded(like mogami) and use that.
-
nice to see some fellow headfi-ers
i myself have a hd650 with a little dot V -
So......I finally decided that I am going to just throw in a couple more bucks and go for some ATH AD700 for $140 also (inc shipping), I also spotted a pair of open box AKG K240MKII for $149 (plus 8% off coupon). Any opinions?
-
why would ad700's cost $140?
amazon has them for $85 -
They cost that much when you don't live in the US.
Interesting though the Amazon US price have dropped another $5 or so (last time I checked 2 weeks ago it was $90+, might get someone to buy it for me then ship it to Canada. ^^ Thanks for the link. -
The Shure SRH840's can be gotten for $117 USD, but they don't ship to Canada. Think we can get someone from the States to ship it to us up here?
I have a 10% coupon for the site you're looking at, I was close to getting the SRH440's for $70 shipped but the SRH840 sound great....but at double the cost though. -
Yeah I was going to pick some up the SRH440's too, what a great price, but I decided I'd really prefer open+comfy headphones more. Other wise I would have probably bought the MS1 already.
-
Holy frigging cr*p!!! RE0 dropped to $79... thankfully I didn't buy at $99 lol. WIN!
*purchases
-
Yea, at $99 they're a steal, at $79? Hell, My grandma's getting a pair this Christmas
I like my MS1i's, $117 shipped is a great price, but commuting with them is impossible. The SRH840 should handle it but I need a good price on them, they can be bought at $117~ a set, but they only ship within the States. I wonder if any of the US mods/admins are willing to do me a favour >
-
From what I've heard USPS flat rate boxes offers well priced shipping.
I am getting another NBR member to ship some AD700 to me when I get some money in my paypal account.
-
The problem is that they don't take international credit cards, only US issued ones, nor Paypal. So I have to ask of them to pay using their CC and then I'll send back money via PayPal, which seems to be a hassle. I might just wait it out until I get better options.....
-
@Johnny: Mind posting up your thoughts on the hardware after you get it. I'm planning on getting a pair myself over the holidays.
-
Thats what I will be doing (paying them back via paypal).
Will do, but that will probably be two to three weeks. -
Ahhh, well I just won a bid on ebay for the SRH840, I sent a bets offer of $129, and they took it
The invoice cost for a pair hovers around $115 apparently.
-
Nice! Good deal. But hows your bank account feeling?
-
What bank account.
-
Paypal is taking too long to transfer my money.
I missed out on a good deal the other week on some Klipsch custom 2 for $25 shipped. :-/ Forgot to bid. -
Good to see some fellow hi-fi'ers on NBR. My current setup is iPod classic and iPhone 3GS as my sources, Klipsch Image S4 and Beyerdynamic DT770's as my IEM and cans respectively and they are amped by a Fiio E5 as my ultra portable and my iBasso D2+ Boa as my portable/DAC. Will most likely add a tube amp like the LD MKIII eventually, but I'm very happy with my "affordable" mid-fi setup
-
Just for everyone's general information, I haven't seen Bose mentioned here, and they have some fabulous headhones. I found mine by 'accident' when I was at Best Buy trying to find a good set for under $75, or so. Every set I tried was really uncomfortable, and the sound quality was pretty poor. In desperation, I looked over at the Bose display, which had an "in the ear" model for $100. I recognized the name Bose, of course, and knew the quality would be there, but I didn't know about the comfort. Well, I was very, very pleasantly surprised, because these are the most comfortable in-ear headphones ever. They don't actually stick into your ear, the way most do, they kind of just sit in the little 'cup' like space, (right next to - on the outside of - your ear passage). Anyway, they feel great, don't get hot, and the sound quality is fantastic. Best $100 I've spent in a long while!
PS Bose gives you 3 sizes of earpieces with the headphones, and a coupon for a free additional 2 earpieces in the size of your choice. Nice to have, and makes it a bit of a better value too. -
My friend has a QC1 and 2 and we both weren't really impressed by the sound quality or the noise cancelling abilities, especially for such a steep price ($400+ then). Don't know much else of their other products but I find them to be of only mediocre build and sound quality at a cost that is above their level. I'll stick with my Head-Direct RE0's for $79 thankyouverymuch.
-
Hmmmm, interesting. I was totally surprised and blown away by the great sound quality (and comfort). Of course, you're talking about a different Bose model than I have, (and mine only cost $100, not $400). Maybe I just got lucky with mine. . .
-
I think you're talking about a different one - the Triport AE's.
Not ultimately a huge fan of the Triport's sound quality I have to say especially in terms of the relatively uncontrolled in-cup reverberation, but for me they are a better compromise than anything else which is 'head-fi approved' in terms of acceptable sound for outdoor use, isolation, comfort and portability.
You want to look like a total nerd? Fine - knock yourself out with your SRH840's and HD280's, I don't. You want to bling it up Head-Fi style - stick some wood on it, and have slightly better sound quality than the Triport minus the reverberation, but with none of the isolation or the comfort for three times the price? Fine - go admire yourself in the mirror with your ATH-ESW's, I don't. You want decent sound quality and super isolation but with a feeling like someone's hitting your ear with a hammer? Not me, well not always at least - although I do dig out the HD25-1 from time to time. And as for the 'K81/K518DJ's are so much better than the Bose crap for half the price' - I'd like some of what you're smoking.
And that's why I use the Triports when I'm outside and using headphones. I'd welcome alternatives, but none of the Bose-bashing, no-real-experience peer-group types at Head-Fi seems to be able to come up with one.
The QC's are good, and most Head-Fi types make the mistake of comparing these with open headphones in their basement. All I can say is 'well duh'. Not competitive against some IEM's perhaps especially in terms of all-round isolation, but those which offer comparable SQ / musical tonal character costs the same, or more. -
Vogelbung, have you tried AVS forum or Hard OCP forum?
-
Well - yes, I do have accounts at both, but I go there for other things. But as I notice from the exchanges, the bulk of people who would offer advice on things headphone-related in there are Head-Fi members with even less actual experience than the median HF members in any case.
Many people seem to get it into their heads that reading a bunch of reviews from a group of people's individual perceptions with no common reference makes them an expert as well... odd, eh? -
In the end, sound is subjective as everyone's ear is different. But if you've tried a product at least, then your experiences have validity for a recommendation. They might not mean much to other people, but I agree with you, that majority of users that give advice from just reading something is meaningless.
-
omg wth? i got mine for £60! about $90
new headphones
