airflow most of the time. some suck air away, some blow air on and some don't do anything but burn a hole in your pocket and your stress level.

for the most part, the coolers that blow air under your laptop are the most effective......though some of the ones that suck the air from undernieth the laptop do a halfway decent job of keeping the temps down.

is there a big difference if you go with a brand name and choose the cheapest one in terms of how effective it is?

I don't think there is much difference. I got a $10 one and it still works after 1 year of use.

i have a small question, just got my cooling pad and toatlly disappointed
my notebook is 15.4", but the cooling pad, uhmm, it's about 12" or 12.5", can't be bigger
it has three fans, running at 1500rpm, blowing air from below
but the funny thing is, it doesn't reduce any single degree, swear to god, i think it's deffective, i tried the Intel Thermal analysis tool without it, and the temp is 69 celcius degrees
with the cooling pad, it's 72 degree :(
does anyone have the same problem? should i buy another one?
by the way, it has 4 USB port :D, which is the only good thing

The temps shouldn't increase... If the cooling pad is too small for the laptop then it may not be sitting correctly so it may be blocking the ventilation holes/grills underneath your laptop. The feet's are there for a reason to allow airflow circulation underneath.

Try raising the laptop up so there is a gap underneath and see if it makes a difference.

    Good solid advise

There is also sofware programes ( like: speedfan.com) that monitor & control your exsisting, inboard fan to run longer and (apparently) faster, but i haven't been able to figure it out yet

Personnally i would suggest using the inboard fan longer instead of turning itself on&off every 8 min.

Does anyone know of a more userfriendly sofware that does this?

If you have a dell notebook, I found I8kfanGUI to work great. Or you can do like I did for so long before I purchase a cooler and get two book put one at each corner of your notebook to raise it, and get a mini-fan to blow air underneath it (LOL) I know -- but it worked :)
