This is my first notebook and I need to get a mouse.
Newbie question - what makes a mouse a notebook mouse and why can't a desktop mouse be used?

kodac,
You can use a desktop mouse, that is what I use.
The laptop mouse is smaller and is meant for mobility, it is smaller, yet has all the functionality of a full-size desktop mouse.
If you prefer the size of a desktop mouse, go with it. -
I must say, however, that I got one of the new Microsoft wireless optical notebook mice last week, and it's one of the best mice I've ever used. Not only is it highly precise and portable (and not to mention a good size for a notebook mouse...I have huge hands), but the receiver snaps into the mouse to turn it off when not in use to save the battery! Plus, it only uses a single AA battery. A pretty sweet deal, I must say.

Maybe the size and shape of the receiver? (i.e. plugs directly into the USB port, without any cords...)

Well, having an external mouse that is corded should not affect too much of the battery life. If you were to buy a wireless it might bring down the battery life a little bit due to the computer having to power the receiver. Other than that all I can think of is the size.

I don't think there would be a drastic drop in battery, probably about 10 minutes or less if you went wireless.
