Unless it's a touchscreen I don't see a need. Just use a proper cleaning cloth when you clean it and you'll never have issues. Use LCD cleaning kits with the one use swabs when you have spots. Only use them on the screen and only when very wet.

I agree. I also think that with todays newer screens, some type of screen protector may distort the picture. You can find microfiber clothes for as little as 3 dollars and they do a great job of cleaning without any cleaning solution.

Maybe because it's your first, you may want to leave it on there until you get used to handling your laptop. With basic care, your LCD panel should be scratch free. Most scratches will come from touching the screen (fingernail graze) or debris getting between the keyboard and screen when closed. A decent sleeve can prevent the latter. One suggestion: Remove the plastic film (see your LCD in all its glory), and when you pack it up, put a microfiber cloth between the keyboard and LCD. Now you have something to help prevent scratches and you can keep your laptop clean.

ive seen people not put new "eraser mouse jobs" on very well, and after closing their laptops a few times, they had a nice round scratch on the screen, sad but true.

    Hi,

I ordered one of those from the Dell website (my laptop is an X300) and I will report on how it all works later when I receive it.

As far as others' comments about scratches. I used to have a Dell C400 for about 2 years and the screen got sorta messed up - nothing that affects the visibility of stuff on the screen, but you could see some grease marks and faded spots and scratches when the lcd was turned off. So, my intentions for my new laptop is to get the screen protector so if anything happens as far as scratches go, then just replace the lcd protector.

Exactly what happened to me. My previous Thinkpad had scuff marks (some permanant) from the keyboard and pointing stick.

Now that I have a fresh screen I use the shaggymac microfiber screen protector to preserve the screen from day 1.

    ...-_-_...

Where do you get the "shaggymac microfiber screen protector" or any other type of protector?

It's just a microfiber cloth and you can pick those up just about anywhere. CompUSA sells some by Memorex and Belkin. I've also seen the Memorex clothes @ BestBuy. I picked one up from my local grocery store for $2.99. Works just as good as the $3.99 Memorex and it's larger.

[8D]I would like to say that I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 600m and I bought a Macally Screen protector size 14 inches for Ibook. The screen size is the same. It does not matter that its a dell. They go by screen size not brand. The only complain that I have is that you place the screen to the lcd the heat generated by the lcd makes it come off. Solution to this problem is scotch tape on the sides. They are hardly noticeable. It is a small price to pay to protect the most important part of a notebook. I bought the screen protector at www.jr.com cost $15.00 plus shipping.

I don't use any screen protector and doubt I ever will. Just don't use it in a sand storm and don't let anyone touch the screen itself, that puts the oils from you body on the display and leaves a mark that attracts dust. I've found the best way to clean an LCD display is to get a clean/soft hand towel and put a little water (2-3 ounces) on it. Just so that you have a damp area with most of the towel remaining dry; then use the wet area to wipe over the LCD and then the dry area to dry it off. Using soap, alcohol, or other cleaner will leave a build up over time.
