can anyone recommend a good set of speakers that is compact, maybe like the logitech audiohub, but that uses a regular input (not usb)?

    thanks. :)

I have the JBL On Tour myself, it plays nicely.

Someone a short while ago mentioned the X-Mini Max Capsules, and I thought they looked promising to try out.

thanks for the suggestions. it looks like neither the logitech v20s nor the jbl on tour speakers has a subwoofer.

infoseeker: how's the bass on it? i'll check out the x-minis, too.

The JBL On Tour's is mostly crisp and clean sounding. The bass thus is less of a BOOM and more of a THUMP, if your into that; but is more solid in a way. Very portable. Since its a one-piece, you can't really separate the two speakers farther for a more "surround" feeling.

Oh the Minis and Minimax are two different models. The minimax look like they'd give a more 'thump' bass if you're looking for that; but I got no first-hand experience.

i'm not an audiophile, but i do enjoy a robust bass.

i came across the altec lansing soundbar, but the reviews aren't all that great.

I hate to do this... but Bose builds a small 2.1 system. I personally would go with the M-audio Aego-A's though.

    That was probably me.

Anyway, I've tried a few portable speakers for my Creative Zen (spheres, cubes, PSP-shaped, conventional, etc) and, in my opinion, the X-Minimax capsule speakers are, pound for pound, the best sounding miniature speakers out there (although they are for my laptop and not for my Zen). And it has a slight edge over the JBL On Tour with its rechargeable Li-Ion batteries.

I'm posting a few thumbnails to give you an idea:

This are the speakers in capsule mode in comparison with my 14.1" laptop. The white one is the regular X-mini (doesn't come in pairs).

Speakers in split mode. The coin is for size reference.

i have jbl creature ii speakers right now. i'm trying to get away from having separate speakers with wires, etc. all over the place.

i was unable to find these online.

they certainly look neat. do you get enough bass without a subwoofer?

Enough? For my tastes, yes. It can do lows decently and can definitely hold its own (although I heard a slight hum on 2 music tracks - they were basso ostinatos - because it couldn't reach the pitch). However, while it may even trump certain desktop speakers, it can't outperform or even come close to matching a dedicated 2.1 system, which will, of course, need to be bigger and would need to occupy more space.
