A lot of people love them, but I maintain that Logitechs are all bass. The better Altec Lansing are more balanced, but they still don't come close to Klipsch. Personally, I went the monitor route. I decided not to go all out and do the balanced interconnect thing, but picked up some Edirol MA-15D which I'm driving with the TOSlink from my HT Omega Striker.
The Edirols don't have a seperate subwoofer (though you can output to one from them, and adjust the crossover even), but the 4" drivers do a surprisingly good job with bass extension. The musicality of the bass is a real strength, surpassing the Promedias in my opinion.
If you go the stereo route and have a type II PCMCIA slot you could get an Echo Audio sound card. You would have to run analog w/ an adapter, but it should work well. The benefit would be it's portable, so you can use it to drive a good pair of headphones exceptionally well when you're on the road.
For an external solution, I've always liked Terratec. Their USB 5.1 MKII looks very nice, but I don't know how much luck we'd have getting it here in the states. Of course, you have a soccer picture in your avatar, so you're probably not in the statesM-Audio also makes some good parts, but I've become rather disenchanted with them. The quality is still excellent, they just like to switch internal interfaces up between revisions and it causes problems with open source drivers.

If your just going to get a 2.1 then I'd definately go with the Klipsch Pro Media.
