Do you mean AC adapor? can you give a specific model number or post the specifications of the adaptor?

Any generic ac/dc adapter will work as long as its meeting the voltage/amperage requirements for that device.

I had to rig one up for my external optical drive when I lost it using universal cell phone charger.

The device should have it's voltage and amperage requirements listed on a sticker somewhere. You need to match the voltage, and the charger needs to provide at least as much amperage as required, it's better if it can provide more.

The safest bet is to get a proper replacement if you're at all confused about what I just said.

I'll take a crack at this. Voltage is probably 12V, amperage will be at least 2A, although 3A is rated power. My guess is that your universal adapter will deliver much less than even 2A.

Upshot: Best to buy the 'legit' adapter.
