I am in the market for some speakers for my laptop. I want two sets of speakers; one for the road, and one to use while watching movies and playing games through my projector.
For the road speakers I want some that are portable and light weight but have good sound quality.
For the home system, I want some with great surround sound performance and loud volume but retain quality sound/acoustics
can anyone help me with my search?
Thanks in advance to all who reply and I look foward to your post.

The logitech Z-2300's are excellent 2.1 speakers!
I got them for around $90, and they sound amazing. Great for movies (THX rated), music, games, etc.
Check out the reviews on CNet and from buyers on www.amazon.com.
Can't really recommend anything for the road. The Z-2300's are definitely NOT for the road. The woofer is very heavy... not something you'll want to take anywhere.
Good luck. -
Yeah I also own the Z-2300's very very loud and very very good quality. Im playing "Honest Mistake" by The Bravery now at half volume and full base any my mose cursor is bouncing on the screen from the base, the sub is 4 feet away from me now, pointing sideways and its bumping my desk and chest. The Z-2300's are one of the best 2.1 speaker sets out there and its really cheap right now. I highly recommend it.

For on the road I sugest some head phones... trying to take speakers around is going to be a pain, even if they are small. And for headphones I suggest Sennheisers, pretty much all of their models are nice, it just depends on what kind of head phones you like, I personally like their PX100's.

yeah I also have the Z-2300's and I swear by them as well, and so do atleast 4 more of my friends after hearing mine, they just imediately went out and ordered them.
if you can afford it, it sounds like you are looking for a surround setup, and a fairly cheap and easy one would be the Z-5000's or Z-5500's from logitech, i forget which name it is, you can get them at a good price at a lot of different places now, and at 1000watts peak power they are definitely going to be powerful enough -
for stationary speakers, i have the Altec-Lansing VS-4121...they are freakin awesome, probably the best out there, i got them for $99 CAD...but now they have new ones, the VS-4221, i bet they are even better
-
But yeah a kid below me has the logitech X-530's, they're an $80 5.1 setup. Dont get those. I know an $80 5.1 system is tempting, but my 2.1 system is alot louder and sounds alot better than his, and I got mine for $20 more. His sub is weak and the speakers crack alot. Mine are THX rated so they are awesome. So yeah again I would highly recommend the Z-2300's. -

what about the logitech x-230? I know they are good for desktop systems but they seem to mute the bass when I ran them through my laptops headphone jack. Is there any other port I could plug speakers into on my e1505?

WHY IS EVERYBODY RECOMMENDING LOGITEC??????? ALTEC LANSING IS WAAAAY BETTER!!!!!! but logitec is also good too just not as good

I own a set of X-530s - hard to go wrong for $60 if you have a 6-channel output (eg, 3x 3.5mm output jacks). They sound just fine and I can't fathom why you would need more volume or especially why you'd need more bass, unless you were trying to run a rave out of your bedroom. But they have no built-in matrix, so no surround sound without buying an Audigy 2 ZS Notebook, which is an expensive proposition, or the inferioir and outdated Live! 5.1 USB card, and the Audigy is useless if you have only ExpressCard.
I'd recommend the Z-5300s. They're about $140 shipped from NewEgg, and deliver awesome sound (with one of the most impressive subs I've ever seen) and have a built-in matrix to simulate surround sound from one 3.5mm headphone jack.
As for Altec Lansing being better...no. I've owned and heard several Altec Lansing speaker setups, from the integrated 2.0 in my v2000z and a simple 2.0 setup on an old desktop, to impressive-looking 2.1 setups, and don't get me wrong, they're good - but the prices aren't justified. The higher-end Altec Lansing 2.1 setup barely beats out the X-230s at anything but maximum output, and Altec Lansing (at least according to NewEgg) doesn't even have a 5.1 setup, and you said you were looking for surround sound anyways. -
logitech tends to be the best bang for the buck. the z2300s and x230s are the 2.1 versions of the z5300s and x530s more or less. If you check buy.com, zipzoomfly.com and newegg you can usually find a good deal once every few months. Another good way to check is www.gottadeal.com its a great online deals blog.

Unfortunatly I don't have a 6channel out put so the X-530s are basically out of the question.
I was also considering getting the Philips MMS321 Multimedia Speaker System for about $60. It has 40W RMS Total Continuous Power and 80W RMS Total Peak Power. If anyone wants further info on then go to walmart.com and do a search in the electronics section.(sorry,I don't know how to post a link)
any thoughs on this?

z-5500 are awesome. I love mine. They will take a two channel input and use dolby pro logic two music or movie mode to get surround sound. very nice setup.

I will re state my question,

I have not read any reviews yet
I am waiting for them

I'm surprised no one has mentioned them yet, but Klipsch makes seriously awesome speakers, I had a 2.1 set for years that has great sound quality and excellent base, but the 5.1's I upgraded to are better. The 5.1's might be a bit more than you want to spend but you can pick up the 2.1 set for around $100 if you do some looking and catch them on sale, and you won't regret it.

Yep, it sucks, I used to ogle the 5.1 systems in best buy every other week or so, the only reason I was able to afford mine is because I got it used from some idiot who wanted to start DJing local parties for profit and needed start-up money.
Glad you got a set you like though, buying cheaper speakers is like a crap shoot sometimes, I went through 4-5 sets of $50 2.1's before I found one I liked a few years back. -

What about these JBLs for portable speakers? They got a lot of good reviews...has anyone else bought these and liked them?
-

A friend of mine has those JBLs, and though they lack the deep bass (obviously) they sound really good, like suprisingly good, especially for the size.

Klipsch ProMedia series is also nice. I own it for more than 2 years already. I play DVD movie from M1210 to 5.1 speakers all the time. The bass is deadly deep and wide. Super clarity high/low frequency because it comes out from one big twin SUB. If you want to very shake the room then get one of these.
I also have logitech Z-2300. it's very round speaker. But, the bass is lack on detail and not as deep. I tested with DVD earthquake, bomb, space ship, and hip-pop soundtrack 2.1 config. -
Sorry, though they heve some great reviews, they are way out of my price range.

I own the Logitech X-230 system and am quite happy with it. I bought it for $20 from a guy that had a brand-new set with in a damaged box so I got a good price on it. This system will be great for a dorm room as it does not take much room (except for the base that's a little balky but you will get that on virtually any system).
The system is pretty powerful and has more base then you'll ever use (it has a dial on the base that lets you adjust the base intensity) and it's nice to be able to invert the speakers and hang them on the wall or on any vertical surface which makes it look pretty cool.
The speakers are powerful and that's the main plus in a college environment. I don't find the sound quality is not high enough for classical music though I still greatly enjoy some classical guitar pieces after having a pair of old crappy speakers for the last year or so. I think the main minus is that the system lacks a control center which fancier models such as the Z-5500 (Love that system) has but I think your budget would lead you to a 2.1 system rather than a 5.1 system...
IN CONCLUSION: you get a great sound system that serves all of your gaming/movie-watching/music-listening needs for the price of $30(!)
(you can get these speaker for that price vitually anywhere but if you don't fell like looking here's a link to New Egg'sprice, link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836121119R ...Save your money for next semster's books!

I originally was going to get the x-230's but I saw these philips speakers with "bass radiators" at walmart so i decided to buy them instead. Though they are plenty loud and have good bass, they lack performance in very heavy bass songs. The tweaters start to pop and the woofers lose some sound quality when I turn them up all the way on these types of songs. I'll wait a while and then I am going to return to the tried and true logitech.

For under $100, you can not go wrong logitech. Best performance for the price ratio.
