    MP5,

This device is not that bad. I actually have 2 of the Defcon devices. It's pretty ****'d loud when it goes off. You can either set it for motion, or go off when the wire is cut or both. It's a bit useless if it only goes off when cut since the unit's pretty much gone after that. The battery life is pretty good as it uses a 9V battery (not accessible when locked). You should be able to get a month or more out of it (don't use mine since the office has standard Kensington style locks provided) as long as it doesn't go off a lot.

This device is probably best suited for a user on the go. While you're in a conference hall and you step away from your notebook for a bit (in the washroom or shmoozing with the big-wigs), but to use this as a permanent lock may not be the best choice. I'd go with a stationary lock for you're office/home and just have this in your bag when you're out of the office.

the reason why i go for the device is because there is no pole to tie for normal lock.
Is there any recommended lock that does not require a pole/hole?

    Mp5,

With this lock, you'll also need the hole to attach an adapter that fits into the hole. You then feed the cable through the hole thus locking the adapter into place. So both will not fit your needs.

You may want to try out the lock in this thread (1st link). It attaches to the external VGA or a serial port using the screw bolts. This may be an alternative if you don't have the Kensington lock hole. You may want to check again to make sure you don't have it, it's on all notebooks for the past few years.

oh.. what i meant by hole was the pole of a table where the cable would encircle it
