Thunderbolt is compatible with Displayport, so probably.

But who uses thunderbolt anyways? It's like the new version of FireWire...

Not exactly sure what you're asking. However, ThunderBolt is not backwards compatible:

So ThunderBolt --> DP will connect (the ports are identical) but will not work. However, a DP --> ThunderBolt port will.

Yeah, so as long as the monitor supports DP he should be able to connect it to a TB port.

Well yes, but Thunderbolt is not a GPU, the GPU has to be on Thunderbolt. I'm assuming he has a Crap Mini, iCrap or a Barbiebook if he's asking this question, and if he wants to run a FHD monitor at 120hz he's gaming, so it will be also a matter of whether whatever Apple piece of gear he has actually has the GPU power to drive the 120hz monitor at the framerates required.

I'd say last year + this year's top model 27-inch iCraps are the only ones which could be reliably said to be able to do so (though they will be cooking themselves in the process) at good detail levels.

Just looked, yeah - a serious brick but a serious machine indeed - should be zero issues there, unless there's some weirdness on the part of the notebook about passing on video via Thunderbolt (highly unlikely I assume).

The idea behind ThunderBolt is promising but its still a very new (and expensive)alternative. Besides, this wouldn't be the first time Apple has persuaded us to invest in a neat new port technology just to abandon it down the road and leave us holding the bag.

How many firewire devices do you have sitting in drawers gathering dust? It too promised great things (like doubling and tripling in speed) but just vanished from the face of the earth. Conversely, USB was around when it came out and is still around today. Its compatible devices are also ubiquitous, and it is a powered port.

ThunderBolt is superior in speed, but until things like UHD become mainstream, few regular folks need it. Even more so, considering cost.

Aren't thunderbolt ports just like external PCIe/DVI combo ports?

I'm counting 9 only, without the space bar

OP: don't use pure thunderbolt products just in case it got dumped like firewire, VGA is the worse video output interface nowadays but guess what, its still available because its been widely used.... like HDMI now, its been widely adapted too, but not thunderbolt.... it still needs to take a lot of advertisement AND going down on controller prices

Funny you say that, i've had less issues with VGA than HDMI over the years.
