Well, the best way to determine that is to find out the sleeve's dimension and compare with the compartment size of bag. I am sure a Large is big enough.

Are you asking about the Timbuk2 messenger bag, or the Timbuk2 classic sleeve?

I have the Medium classic messenger bag for my T61, and it fits "comfortably" in the bag by itself. The 15.4" T61 has a Width of 14" and it just barely fits the bottom of the bag. If you're going to carry a lot of stuff with you, multiple text books, etc, i would suggest the Large size bag.

I believe the D830/D820 are a bit wider then the T61 as well. Also keep in mind if you're going to use a sleeve for your notebook, you should also factor in the added bulk from the sleeve before you decide on a size. I ordered a WaterField sleeve and had to return it because it added too much extra width to my notebook, and would no longer comfortably fit the medium sized bag.

It's so amazing. Everything is there, exactly where you want it and expect it, yet it's so simple and stylish. I've gotten so many compliments. I even designed my own. It's also amazingly well built so it'll last you a while.

Now it doesn't cover normal/abnormal wear and tear, but still, a lifetime limited warranty that backs any product of theirs out there shows how confident they are in their quality.

Just as a heads up- If you havent read the fine print, the classic messenger bag is no longer made in SF. Every product except for the custom made bags are made overseas.

Good point. I was actually expecting a Made in the USA product, however I believe my bag was made in Vietnam  It would not have affected my purchase, however it would have been nice.

Nice bag Talmud. I went with a preconfigured model. Is the laptop sleeve removable? I was originally looking into the laptop messenger bag, but according to the dimensions on Timbuk2's site, i would have had to go with the Large size bag to fit the T61. Looks like my assumption was wrong.

Does your flap curl up at the edges at all? The flap on my bag curls up quite a bit. The QC standards are definitely not the same as the custom made ones made in SF. My friend ordered a custom one and his does not curl up as well.

For the Laptop Messenger Bag, get a Med, but in the regular messenger, you need a large.

Naw, mine doesn't curl up. Enjoy your bag. I'm sure it's very well made even if it isn't made in SF.

The laptop sleeve is not removable. The laptop messenger is exactly the same as the classic messenger except it has a handle on the outside and a laptop sleeve sewn in.

According to the website, the dimensions between the two are a bit different as well, as the medium laptop messenger has about 3.5" more depth then the classic.

talmud, did you custom order yours from the timbuk2 website? Is there another website with better prices and/or customizeability?

Also, what size should I get for my Sony SZ6? I was thinking medium, but I don't want my laptop to be loose, but I also want to have some usable space in the bag as well.

I like the look, and the price is decent considering you're combining a backpack for class with a computer carrying case.

Nope, all of the custom is through Timbuk2's website.
For a 13.3" Laptop, I think you can go with a small, unless you want more book room.

Are the regular messenger bags and the laptop messenger bags the same besides the laptop insert?

I like the bags, but i also would like a removable insert for the times where i dont need a whole bag and i just need the laptop.

The specs listed on the product page are probably wrong. If you click on "build your own messenger," the dimensions listed there show that they are indeed identical with the exception of the grab strap and the built-in laptop sleeve. Of course I could be wrong so writing to Timbuk2 would be the best idea if you are planning to get this bag online.

I keep hearing about these bags, but I can't get over thinking that messenger bags, especially fancy schmancy bags like the Timbuk2 are murse for "Gucci purse."

Yes, they are pretty much the same. If you want a removable insert, just get a regular messenger and a sleeve.

Can someone chime in with the max dimensions you can fit in the medium bag? I have a G1S and according to the Timbuk2 site that wouldn't even fit in the large bag because of the depth (it's 13.9x11.2x1.5).

The depth should fit, but it'll prop the flap open on the sides quite a bit (can allow water to get inside the bag if it's pouring outside), especially if you decide to use a sleeve that'll add additional bulk to the notebook itself. My T61 with the 9-cell battery fit (didnt fit as well as i would like, but it sitll fit). It had an overall depth of 11" + the added depth from the sleeve.

I have the Medium Classic Messenger.

Are you talking about the Laptop Messenger or the Regular Messenger? If so, you can go with a Large laptop messenger, or a XL Regular Messenger. It can't hurt. You could also always call them. That's what I did.

My thing is I'm a girl and only 5'5", so I don't like carrying a HUGE bag. I wouldn't use an additional sleeve, and probably wouldn't carry it in the rain. I was talking about the Laptop Messenger.

It wouldn't prop it open so much that you could see unattached velcro on the front panel, would it?

    Thanks!

Don't worry about that. The bag isn't huge. But still, I think you'll be okay with a Large messenger (same as Med Laptop messenger)

I've seen the custom Large messenger bag in person, and truthfully, it's HUGE. And that was on a guy who's 5' 8" and 215lbs.

My recommendation would be to go with the Medium messenger bag. I personally have the classic medium, and if you're not going to carry anything else in the messenger bag besides your notebook, you should be fine.

Edit: If you're truly interested in the Laptop messenger bag, you should shoot timbuk2 an email or give them a phone call to ask about the size variations between the classic and the laptop messenger bag. Best of luck.

Nah, Gucci is 95% hype and 5% quality.
Timbuk2 is 100% quality, and if the bag you get isn't, they'll replace it no matter where or how long ago you got it.

tacojohn, just to let you know, the bag you ordered was made in china. although i'm not too sure whether it affects the life of the bag, i've seen a lot of people at my school who have frayed timbuk2 bags.

Yeah, I saw that. It seems very well constructed, even overconstructed in certain places (like where the strap attaches to the bag). Considering I got it for like 25% off of the normal price, I'm not extremely worried about it. If it goes bad after a couple years, I'll probably move on to something like a Bihn Super Ego or ID.

I'm really happy with it so far and will be posting a review here and on my blog once I'm able to get some pics and some use with it. So far, my biggest problem is that the bag is designed to be worn on my left shoulder-right hip, which means it will rest on the fraying stripes of my favorite jacket, probably making that damage worse.

Anyone using one of these with MBP 15" ?

I Dont know should I take regular messenger or laptop one. Dimensions are the same(both large ones), but pictures in the "Build your own bag" site looks different. I got sleeve for my MBP anyway so I dont think I have to go with laptop messenger. Just that there must be room also for my wacom(intuos3 a5wide)..

I really like the look of these bags, and being able to build your own is just great. Just which one to pick is the question. Thanks.

yeah i use mine with my mbp. with the mbp inside, i feel that it is very well protected. the only negative thing about getting the laptop messenger is that you can't take out the sleeve cause it's built in. sometimes, you just want to have more room. if you're going to use your own sleeve in a classic messenger, just remember to stuff the bag (a sweater works) or else it'll be flopping around in there cause it's just a large gaping hole.
other than that, it's pretty awesome.

I am wondering if one can place a laptop with a 9-cell battery (sticks out about an inch) with the battery side down in a horizontal bag. I really like the Timbuk2 messenger bags, but am unsure about the placement of the laptop. Would it be ok to place the laptop 'front side down' into the bag? For some reason this just doesn't seem right to me.

That's why I'm considering the vertical bags from Timbuk2 - Blogger or Hacker. Does anyone have any experience with those?

For a large-cell battery, you might want to go up to the next size bag. So if a medium works for your laptop, I might consider a large, and place the laptop in it so the battery is on the bottom and facing in toward the center of the bag. Only problem with this is that the screen will be pressing against your body when wearing the bag.

Are there bags from timbuk2 with both types of straps? The shoulder strap and the straps to carry the bag like a backpack..?
