I love to use my laptop on my bed, unfortunately its 17" and finding a surface to rest it on just doesn't seem that easy for laptops of this size on the internet =( . it handles heat fairly well so i really dont need a cooling pad, basically something akin to a logitech lapdesk n500 (assuming it could fit 17" comfortably and without the insane price...why are those things so damn expensive).

You aren't supposed to use your laptop on your lap anymore. You are supposed to use your notebook on top of your notes sitting on the desk.

I use my 15" laptop on my lap when in bed, although I could see something larger being a pain. Look for a small bed tray table.

We use three Logitech Comfort Lap Desks in my house, they work very well and worked with my 17"Sagers without a problem, but I tired out an Asus 17" and it hung way off the desk. They look just like the N500 but we paid like $20 for them a number of years back.

    I use this: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...T&cid=262075&lid=4742361&acd=1230980794501410
    and this: http://www.officesupersavers.com/vi...b2OX3OZFlvAtjMbrJCnNHjaaevkBLFDI3MRoCPszw_wcB

I find that the second one is more rigid and I travel with it everywhere. I use it with my 17 inch Clevo P170sm. My home gaming setup is in a boom speaker gamer chair with a box at armrest height for my mouse. Laptop is most comfortable in my lap in this position, and I can play comfortably for hours in the living room watching TV next to my wife.
