it seems that all current mice have "smooth" scroll wheel, which make the middle click very difficult, one has to consciously and carefully press the wheel from a certain, narrow angle, otherwise you'd scroll the **** thing.

I use the middle button exzessively in 3ds max (to pan, zoom, rotate). Is there a decent wireless mouse with a wheel like they used to be? where you don't accidentally scroll when intending to click?

It seems most Microsoft mouses have a smooth scroll, while Logitech have a clicky scroll.

well, I bought a Logitech mx1000 today; while its wheel does have "steps", it still suffers from the problem described. The mx1000 is acutally the reason of this thread.

    Thanks though for feedback :)

    Hi guys,
I have smooth tilt wheel on my Microsoft mouse. I play Operation Flaspoint a lot. Middle click opens a menu with most important commands like "Weapon Carl Gustav" (that is very powerful antitank weapon) and next to it is "Salute".

On stepped wheel it works like charm. I know exactly how many steps do what. And with this smooth wheel mouse there were tragicomical situations like when a big russian T-80U was storming towards me at like 100 km/h reloading the main gun and machineguns blazing to my general direction.
The next scene: Ivan is saluting in front of the 50tons of steel moving very fast.
Next scene: Ivan is lying dead in a pool of blood and T80 cheerfully goes on. :D

Man, that is the best game ever, and this mouse makes it... unusable. Or at least frustrating.

So I must buy some mouse just for gaming. Because this tilt is good when I do programming and coding. Sometimes the code can be very wide and tilt is good in this situations.

    Cheers,

I have the MX1000 and I just did a middle click with it fine. You just have to press straight down. I think this is the greatest mouse ever and it's going to take something pretty nuts to convince me otherwise.

the MX1000 middle click is terrible!!!!!!! my roomate has the Logitech Di Novo bluetooth desktop, which is fantastic, the mx1000 is great except that ****ty click wheel, it is ok but you just have to click exactly straight down, if you just use your middle finger press down with the middle part of your finger instead of the tip and it works ok.

i have a MS wireless laser mouse 6000 and i can use the click wheel without scrolling no problem,

but it is easier to just reassign middle click to one of the sidebutton for that program i think, softimage camera control requires middle click so it works ok but i would rather just use the wheel to zoom in and out.

i don't like how the MX1000's 2 main buttons are just a little loose also, just bothers me, and it isn't as pretty as my MS 6000 ^_^

great that some know what I'm talking about :) not everyone relies on the middle button.

I tried reassigning the buttons even on the MX 1000, but it wasn't a big help. I absolutely need the middle button on the wheel because it's already kind of "hard-wired" into my hand/brain. If I have to consciously and carefully press that thing, my productivity in 3ds max won't be even half as usual.

Will be checking out the MS Wireless Laser 6000, thanks.

The "application switch" button on the MX1000 I found extremely useless. I've reassigned it to kill, but maybe it would be a good one for you to reassign to "middle click"

I use the application switch button on my MX1000 all the time. before that, my old MS wired mouse had the back and forward buttons on the sides, I switched the forward button to "alt+tab", worked even better.

I went the the local electronic discounter again and picked up a Logitech LX7, which has a stepping wheel. Unfortunately, the middle click is still not comfortable.

Now I know: it's also about the force needed to make a click. It should not be considerably more than for the 2 main buttons.

So: does anyone know a mouse which...
    - has a good grip (rubber or something)
    - has a stepping wheel
    - has a easy-to-click wheel
    - is wireless (optical or laser doesn't matter), ideally Bluetooth with no lag
    - is somewhat nice looking

    Hints appreciated!

I guess the 3rd click is harder(scroll click) because most have the 4 way scrolling wheel.

The mx700 is an oldie but a goodie
