I think its difficult to buy a 250GB external hard drive for $100 to $150. More like $200 to $250.

Seagate makes some good external hard drives. So does Maxtor. I havent heard of Cavalry or INOi. LaCie makes some good looking drives, but I've heard that they experience problems after a while.

I have my LACIE (Porche Design) 6 months now. It is a great-reliable-stylish harddrive with 250GB of storage. I've had no problems so far and two of my friends also bought exactly the same one. The price too is affordable. Here is a link (this is UK though) have a look here.

I paid £96 back then, now it's selling for £77.

Stay with western digital you cant go wrong. 250 gigs will probably be way over 150 though, why do you need so much memory, I do many videos (25 in the past year) ranging from weddings to anniversarys, and more, I have a 120gig Western Digital external hard drive and its barley over half full with every single one of those 25 videos dvd image files backed up. IMO, if you really dont need something that large dont spend the money, but if your in a situation where you do need a 250+gig hd then I would highly reccomend western Digital.

I like the WD external drive icanhabsum mentioned above, especially if you can get it down to $99. I've seen some excellent reviews for that model.

A cheaper alternative is to buy a standard 3.5" hdd and a separate external enclosure.

That's what I did. I bought a 3.5" usb enclosure on ebay for $14, and a 250gb western digital harddrive on newegg for $80, for a total of $94.
