currently trying to figure out if I should get a notebook backpack or a normal backpack and a sleeve. specifically i'm wondering whether the crumpler team player (now known as the beer back) can offer me the same protection as a shinza sleeve while still providing a decent amount of space for books and stuff for classes.

Well a notebook packpack will probably offer more protection for your investment.

I think should just buy a shinza sleeve and use your normal backpack. Supposedly, the shinza has a wire frame, and some nice shock absorbing material.

If you're looking for a bag that has really good protection, go to roadwired.com - they have some really nice bags. Their Skooba Satchel is really cool. Got Editors choice from Laptop Mag.

Personally I think www.tombihn.com has the best protective stuff for carrying a notebook. They sell backpacks, messenger style bags, and really well protected notebook sleeves that fit inside thier bags perfectly. The nice thing of doing it this way is if you just have to carry your notebook to a meeting or something, you conveniently have a sleeve you can carry it in.
If your looking at a backpack solution look at their Brainbag and Monolith sleeve. If you want a messenger style bag, look at the Braincell sleeve and one of thier messenger bags. -
thought i'd give an update on my situation, havent ordered my z70va yet as i'm in the middle of midterms part 2 and dont feel like i need the distraction of a laptop calling my name while i'm supposed to study. but my mom randomly got a black jansport maffia for like 20 bucks at jcpenny and i've been carrying it around loaded with books and i've got to say it isnt too bad, especially for the price. support seems better than my last backpack but the protection for the laptop is...well i dunno about averageish i guess. i'll feel more comfortable with a sleeve. there's plenty of storage and the thing has already been put to the test this week with me getting caught in the middle of a down pour >.< but everything stayed nice and dry inside.
which would offer best protection/carrying capacity
