Why do 9 cell batteries stick out on laptops?
-
Because they have 9 cells, which (obviously) occupy a larger volume than 6 cells. And many laptops shells (especially smaller ones) are optimized for 6-cell batteries.
It is entirely possible to have laptops that completely envelop a 9-cell battery (in fact, I would be surprised if some did not exist, especially in the 15.4" and larger range). But that laptop will, itself, have to be bigger. Most people would not like that, I believe.
I think we're all waiting here for the "real breakthrough" in battery technology, the one that would give at least 10 times as much capacity while hopefully also shrinking the volume... Unfortunately that doesn't seem to happen. I imagine it is quite a difficult challenge developing this new technology. -
actually, new technologies for increasing battery life are being announced every few months. problem is, this stuff still needs lots of developing until it's market-ready.

sticking out is because:
- physically larger
- if you dig a hole big enough for a notebook to fit 9cell instead of 6, the design will have few issues:
1. people will be expecting a 12cell and ask "why do 12 cell batteries stick out?
2. it forces the price up to include a 9cell instead since there will be gaps to include a 6cell, it is a negative to customer's perception
3. you might lose a card reader space, a USB space or forcing the design to use the casing as a heatsinkP no, mbp isn't what i am describing)
- smaller margin from companies to sell accessories
- weight issue (potential)
technology breakthrough are always happening, but to push a product out to the masses firms will need to sell all of their overstock, use up all of their manufacturing process that is not transferrable, phases out current tech such that there will be enough economies of scale to drive down the price, blah blah blah
in fact lithium is not as trivial as we might think, and it is also difficult to replace as well for portability issue, try name 3material that is lighter than lithium and you will know what is wrong here
ps. cut cost > increases expenditure, 6cell is well enough if the other hardware consume much less electricity than today's (which would then be another issue, or question like: why are we still using 2.5" hdd? or why do gpu get so hot thingies) -
Interestingly enough, dell supplied internal 9 cell batteries in the i1505. This stopped with the 1520 and 1525. Additionally in the past, you could put 2 batteries an many of dells computers and still have the cd drive in there. Also more interestingly, you could remove that cd drive and put a 2nd hard drive in there. This was all in a decently sized 15" form factor with 2 batteries and 2 hard drives. I wish companies could do the same again now a day.

that's why we see eeepc sells when only half of the population with small hand can use them in the first year
why do 9 cell batteries stick out?
